i have been an avid reader of science fiction my entire life. a gift my father passed on down to me. it is exceedingly rare for me to come across a book that is so unique in both the subject matter and how it portrays the 'big picture.' anyone who enjoys smart thought provoking science fiction will absolutely be thrilled by this book.
Poul Andersens Boat of a Million Years, LE Modessitt The Forever Hero.
The back and forth between the two stories made for an interesting read. However, the human story dragged on towards the end of the book, thus the 4 stars. Still worth the read though.
A totally original story that is beautifully crafted by a very capable author, to be enjoyed by discerning sci-fi fans. The scope of this novel is vast and requires a certain commitment from the reader but the payoff is an amazing reading experience that will challenge the very notion of what it means to be human.
If you're a fan of truly great sci-fi, this is a must read!
The novels explores ideas of human nature, the development of civilization, evolution, social inclusion and exclusion and their genetic roots, attitudes toward technology, artificial and created intelligence, mortality, genetic manipulation, and especially evolution.
This book fills the bill and takes genetics to a new level entirely and combines it with a species originating on earth, is far different from ours but still very relate-able as presented in this book. If that isn't enough, mix in space travel over thousands of years, a last gasp effort to save humanity and the effects of time. It really made me think about choices that humanity will be faced with now and in the future regarding science and our relations with other intelligent beings and hope we make the right choices.
I hope this isn't the only science fiction book this author writes, as I look forward to reading more by him. He is obviously a very talented and intelligent writer and certainly deserves the award he received for this book. I am certainly going to recommend it to my friends who like science fiction and highly recommend it to you.
