A very Ghibli-esque Makoto Shinkai film - and it's great!

To sum it up: Makoto Shinkai made an homage to Ghibli. And it is stunning.

I purchased this when Sentai and RightStuf offered their sale, but Amazon's price was the same (Prime shipping) as their sale price plus shipping cost. It is currently a STEAL at $11.49. This is the four disc Blu-Ray edition, and it is worth every penny and then some.

For those unfamiliar with Makoto Shinkai, probably best to start with either 'The Place Promised in Our Early Days' or '5 Centimeters Per Second' just so you don't start thinking he's ripping off Ghibli themes. His favorite film growing up was 'Castle in the Sky' by Hiyao Miyazaki, and it definitely inspired much about this film. Which is sad because Miyazaki is one of Shinkai's biggest critics... (( Hey Miyazaki san... how did your last couple of films do? \('.' )/ ))

If you are a fan of Shinkai, then this is a MUST OWN. It is a great collector's item and the perfect addition to any anime library.

Really good movie. Plot gets a little sketchy in some places (A to C without a B in between). Art work in beautiful. Very Miyazaki like in that regard (even the character look). It's not a rip off of Studio Ghibli in any way, but if I had to name a comparable Ghibli movie it would be Princess Mononoke. It has that kind of story and feeling to me. I often see Makoto Shinkai compared to Hiyao Miyazaki and I have not seen it in other movies.....styles are totally different in every way. But this one was close.

I bought this because I love the works of Makoto Shinkai and am trying to watch them all before the end of 2017, and this seemed like a good deal, considering this comes with the DVD and Blu-ray, and the DVD is only on Amazon from 3rd party sellers for obscene amounts of money. After this one, I only have "Place Promised in Our Early Days" left to watch to complete my Shinkai viewing experience. If you are curious about it or are looking for an introduction to anime give it a shot. It contains all of Shinkai's trademarks including beautiful colour and animation, as well as character connections that will leave you in tears. $12 is relatively cheap for an anime movie on Blu-ray.

It was ok, but to be honest, Shinkai does slice of life much better than fantasy epic. It looked great and the story was intriguing, it just didn't seem to ultimately come together. His works like Your Name, 5 Centimeters Per Second, and Garden of Words are much stronger than this effort. Let Miyazaki and others corner the market on this type of anime. Shinkai should stick to what he knows and excels at. Still, this had a lot of potential, so maybe another go at it is warranted.

Love this movie! The artwork is amazing! The storytelling is on point! I've been waiting to see this for so long and it was worth the wait :) The message the movie is about is also wonderful! This came with the Blu-ray AND the DVD :)

I started watching this on the tv once upon a time and had it on my dvr saved but unfortunately it was deleted and I was never able to finish until now. Everything was great from the story to the animation, I’m glad I finally went ahead and purchased this movie and recommend anyone else to buy it as well.
