I am a die-hard Arthur C. Clarke fan, so one can imagine what it takes to impress me. I have read a lot of upcoming indie authors, and while all of them have been good, some stand out as simply fantastic. Jack Hall and Children of the Void is such an author and book.
His writing style is excellent, keeps a good pace, the action and story move along seamlessly, with in depth character development that does not overdo it. At first, when he introduces the generation ship, I am thinking Rendezvous with Rama, one of my all-time favorite books and series. However, that’s as far as the similarities go, he totally made this his own and it was inventive and fun to experience. I loved the enhanced nature of our characters capabilities and appreciated that they were still not invincible.
Then there is his plot locations. Between the amazing descriptions of the Luzariai and their home world to the incredible detail and believability of the alien planet the Aionians colonize, complete with incredible flora and fauna, he really hit the mark. Best of all was plain old fashioned outstanding story telling. I honestly did not know where things were going at times and he pleasantly surprised me by NOT going where I thought he would.
This was an outstanding book and I am so excited for the sequel. Well done Jack! Keep up the fantastic work.
I really liked how the author handled character development throughout the book. Without giving anything away, they go through some very emotionally trying moments and need to rally for the sake of their very survival. Some books can go too far toward emotionality or stoicism, but I think this book strikes a good balance.
I particularly liked the depiction of alien worlds in this book. The cultures and physical characteristics seemed well thought out and internally consistent for the worlds, while each was still distinct. I especially enjoyed the ties back to Earth.
While I this book was a great ride, I do need to warn that it ends in a cliffhanger. Certain elements of the story do get wrapped up, but not enough is resolved for this book to stand on its own. With that said, I'm anxiously awaiting the next installment!

If you are one that likes your action from page one, you will be disappointed. Jack takes his time developing his characters and developing the plot. It was about halfway through the book that the first chapter's purpose came into play. Then everything broke loose. I can't wait for the second book since we now have a clear idea of each persons part in this play.
