I have been offered the chance to review a few different books by Dan Jackson. The first book is called Amazing Facts About Penguins. Penguins are typically a big hit with children- which gives me really high standards for a book discussing them. Simply because there are so many out there.
This book didn't disappoint me. I have the e-book version and I actually really love that. I could display the book on the smart board or print it out and have my class sequence the book as we read it together! Integrating technology into the classroom is extremely important and using an e-book offers a lot of fun creative ways to do so!
Now to the actual book itself. I found out a lot about penguins that I didn't already know. And honestly, I know a lot about penguins. The text isn't too difficult to read but it does have some content vocabulary that is crucial when learning about penguins! I think that this book is certainly written for the elementary grades. It could be read aloud for the younger grades (maybe 1st and 2nd) but could be read alone in the upper grades (3rd through 5th).
In addition to the very informative text is the wonderful pictures of penguins. The book displays various breeds of penguins doing many different things. I do wish that the pictures had captions explaining which breed of penguin is displayed. It would be great for students to be able to have that information. On the other hand a teacher could easily create an extension product for fast finishers to look up the different penguins and associate the breed with a picture.
Another thing I wish this book had is a glossary. A lot of the content words such as carnivores, colonies, plumage etc. Our students are taught to look for glossaries in nonfiction texts and I was a little disappointed to not see one here. However a fast finisher could easily look up content words and create their own penguin dictionary based off the book.
Overall I liked this book. There were a lot of positives! Anything I didn't love I could easily adapt for my own classroom! I think it is worth checking out!
"I like the book. It gives great facts about penguins. I liked the pictures of the penguins. They looked real. The baby chicks looked cute. They were black and furry. I think the book was a happy book. I like how the author wrote the book. He made it seem like someone was really teaching us those facts."
After allowing her to read it, I finally read it myself and I am impressed. As a kid, I know I liked books that had pictures with very few words under them. The pictures are all of great quality and fun to look at. The word count on each page is great for the age range of this book. One of my favorite facts listed in the book is: "Penguins do not fear human contact." Definitely a great read for a 4-9 year old. I know my youngest, who is 2, will enjoy having me read this to her as she loves penguins too.
I received this book free via Tomoson for an honest review.
You can find my review here on my blog: http://blessedmamasblurbs.blogspot.com/2014/09/amazing-facts-about-penguins-ebook.html
The writing can be a bit advanced for younger children, but a parent could read it or even paraphrase the facts in a way a young child can understand. There are also a few grammar errors that should be corrected.
Overall, a cute educational book.
I received a copy for review purposes. All opinions are my own.
