I purchased this for my three year old granddaughter to use while we were camping. She LOVES nature and creatures. She liked it but wasn't in love with it.
As other reviewers said it's a little difficult for little hands to open. She was able to open it after we opened and closed it a few times. It seemed a little tight at first. The biggest issue we found was that the opening is basically on the bottom of the catcher. So when the kids go to "catch" a bug, spider or butterfly they could accidentally maim or kill the creature. I really think it would have been better if the door didn't risk injuring critters. Most of the creatures she picked up by hand and then put it into the container. However, she came upon a catapillar that we were unsure about and so she used her new catcher to pick it up and to release it into her critter cage. The catcher has a magnifying glass but it really doesn't magnify very well.

It's a brittle plastic that may break if you have a kid's who is rough with their toys. I could see it breaking if it got dropped or thrown to the ground. The only issue we had was the "door" somehow quit working... After some messaging around with it we were able to get it working.

I doubt I would buy this again. I don't think she'll play with it enough for the price... She's not afraid to just pick up bugs, snails, worms or whatever so it doesn't get a lot of use. That being said I would say if you have a child you want to introduce to critters and they don't want to use their hands this could be a good thing for them.

I purchased this with my own money. I hope this review helps somewhat.

I bought this for my daughter for catching bugs during the summer, and you press the red trigger to open it and release to close it. Well the spring is already shot so when she releases the trigger, one side of it doesn't close anymore... Quite disappointed..

As a #ALLCREATURELIVESMATTER 😏 believer, my apprehension was if the doors on the bottom used to capture the target would inadvertently squish it or harm it depending on fragility off subject. I was not able to discern the result because i was only visiting, and product was a gift. We came across a cricket and moth, both of which i just caught with my hands and released into catcher. Regardless my 4yr old LOVES it!

Catching the bugs is super easy with this little gizmo. Fits in the hand just like a flashlight. Pull the trigger and the doors open. Release the trigger and the doors shut. We especially like the magnifier. My kid is only 2. He immediately opened the doors with his fingers and broke off a door. None the less, a great toy and concept. We will purchase this again about 5 years old.

I bought this for my grandson's 4th birthday. He has shown a real interest in bugs at the museum and when playing outside so I thought what a great way for a 4 year old to spend some learning time outdoors. He loves it and loves watching what he catches! I also bought him a Bug Book and a children's set of binoculars, magnifying glass, flashlight and compass. When he is in his backyard or in the mountains he and his parents or he and I have some very special time together. The only rule I have - he can't release the bugs inside the house!
