I purchased this book to get my five year old daughter interested in poetry. I was hesitant at first due to the lack of illustration and briefly considered buying a version which had more pictures and then impulsively went ahead with this unabridged original. I definitely don't regret that decision now. Inspite of the minimal illustrations, the poetry is so captivating it was able to hold the attention of my 5 year old through many of the poems. The poems are easy to understand even to a little girl as young as 5. It is enjoyable even to me and we found our selves reading poetry all evening. A definite must if you're interested in creating a classic library collection for your child. Some of the other items in my daughters little library include the complete tales and poems of Winnie the Pooh and Beatrix Potter Complete collection...

We had the unabridged version of this, and I can't say how much I loved it. It really belonged to my big sister, but here I am at 46, and it is still in my possesion. Every poem is so simple and sweet, and for me, these illustrations really made it special. The pages are so big, and the drawings of the children so quaint. Most of the pictures are of children playing in the garden. When I read it as a child, I would lose myself in the pictures. I believed that EACH poem was about that VERY child in the picture. I read it so much, that without even trying, I memorized many of the poems. Now when I am digging in my garden, these poems come back to me. I must order more of these for the new grandchildren.

If you grew up as I did, being read to, then you probably remember A Child's Garden of Verses. It was actually a much newer volume that I was seeking, but since it was not available and this was, I ordered it. Naturally, the poems are the same and that is what was most important to me, and this fine old book is probably more of a treasure than newer volumes. It is not in the impossibly pricey category as some additions which I found for hundreds or thousands. As a person who values things collectible, I feel this is a bargain and worthy of a place on the shelf. Naturally, condition is a factor.

The narration is a little boring but the book is nice. I wouldn't mind the boring reading so much (it is clear so pretty easy for the kids to follow along) except that so many of the poems are skipped. That makes it hard to follow along and it specifically says on the back that ALL of the poems are read. But they aren't.

But wasnt much impressed with illustrations. The book can be said well decorated but it misses the illustrations I expected. Other illustrators like Jessie Wilcox Smith, Gyo Fujikawa and many other has done justice to these childhood poems.
