This is a well-written, tightly plotted mystery, with many twists and turns. Things that are suspicious turn out not to be, and things that seem normal aren’t. Kate has a lot to contend with, professionally and personally.
What I like about this series is that the characters are all well-rounded and three-dimensional, even the minor characters. The plots always grip me and I end up worrying about Kate, Olbeck and the others even when I’m not reading. Kate is flawed, and a workaholic, but she keeps trying. She admits when she’s wrong and her heart is always in the right place, even when she loses her temper. The author evokes a good sense of place and I feel like I’m right on scene with Kate as things are happening.
I received an advance copy of this from the author, with the understanding I do an honest review when I was done. I would have bought it anyway, as much as I like these characters – in fact, I did buy the e-book version as soon as it was available because I’d like to binge read this series in order sometime. I haven’t read book four in the series yet, so I was aware from this plot things had happened that I missed, but the references were organic to the plot and I didn’t feel lost when I read them, like in some books.
I highly recommend this series. I'd give it six stars if I could.
If you like a well plotted mystery that is fast paced and hard to put down, these are the books for you. I binge-read the entire series in around 10 days after I'd read the first book.
Check these out, you'll be glad you did.
I will read more in this series...I'm hooked.
