I've bought this twice, will probably buy it a third. Chimichanga is a spectacular work for young and old alike. If you liked the Goon, and want to share a fun story with your child, this is a great way to get them hooked on Eric Powell's sense of humor and amazing art.

I bought it the first time for me, a second time so my daughter could have her own copy.

Dark Horse reprints Albatross Exploding Funny Books' series Chimichanga, written and drawn by Eric Powel, but this time you can see the Bearded lady (girl) with a funny giant creature take on the evil pharmaceutical company in full color. If you approach this tale of the down and out circus troop and their battle with a wicked witch and an even MORE villainous pharmaceutical CEO as some kind of statement about society, with a deep internal meaning that will have you grasping at new understanding emerging from the pages your eye has just cast over, you will not only be disappointed, but may see the whole thing as so two dimensional as to be insulting to your intelligence. If you instead opt to look at Chimichanga as a Mad Magazine like lark, where everyone is painted with a very wide brush, you'll discover the story is just plain ole fun.

In a nutshell, the bearded lady (girl) of a down and out touring circus with rather unsensational side show acts stumbles upon a witch who needs the whiskers of a bearded lady to complete her all powerful brew after she has purchased a Chimichanga to eat and it taking it home. A strange looking stork has coughed up an odd looking egg in the witch's front lawn (we never know why or where it came from) unbeknownst to the two females, and the bearded lady (girl), Lula, trades some whiskers for what she thinks is a rock. The rock hatches into a large hairy misshapen critter, generally bipedal, and it eats Lula's lunch, and thus gets the name Chimichanga.

He is a hit at the circus (they will be SAVED), and the witch's brew fails, but does relieve intestinal gas - only to make it come back worse. This appeals to the big pharmaceutical peeps as they can sell us relief to a symptom caused by the relief. Big $$$. Eventually the witch runs out of her brew and to make more the company must capture Lula and the rest of the tale is one of rescuing our little (no longer) bearded girl.

If you find that plot synopsis stupid, you won't get the fun of it. You'll balk at the mean old pharmaceutical guy burying a newly found cure for cancer to get his gas xxx-tream on the market, ponder at how he can take Lula as a slave just because he has a lawyer who claims ownership of her, and be disappointed in the physics. This is the kind of tale where Lula's conversation with he captor, the aforementioned pharmaceutical guy, goes like this:

Lula: "You don't care that you're scaring a little girl and making her very sad?"

CEO: "Hmmm. No, No not feeling it."

Lula: "Wow, you're a real butthead."

It's all in the humor and not the tale, and it works well. Nicely collected, nicely colored, have fun with it.

Tired of the standard everyday fare in graphic novels? Looking for something different and exciting? Then come one and come all, step up to the tent of wonder in the Wrinkle's Traveling Circus. See Heratio, the boy faced fish, Randy the man with the strength of a slightly larger man, and Lula the bearded girl! And joining them as the newest attraction after hatching from an egg in Lula's wagon the amazing, the fearsome, and the somewhat hairy Chimichanga! But all is not well. The circus is failing and the other performers don't care for Chimichanga so a plot is hatched to get rid of him once and for all. And then Lula is taken hostage by a local cooperation to use her beard for a potion! What will they do? Will Lula's grandfather, who runs the circus, be able to get her back? Will the circus close? Will Lula lose her beard? And what will happen to Chimichanga? Read the book and find out!

First off I love the beginning of the book. It's just so different from the average story and funny as all get out with the image of of a little bearded girl taking on the giant monster. And that she's a precocious little 6 or 7 year old girl with her polka dotted underpants showing and that she's not afraid of anything, except of course for working at the fishing canning factory, just creates an even richer character. The story seems a bit preachy when it comes to dealing with the cooperation, but it's still such a charming adventure that it can be overlooked. And although you could say this might be the classic story of a girl and her monster...wait, nope its not an old classic, but a new one.

The artwork is bloody brilliant in this book. From how the grandpa is drawn with fat rolls to Heratio the boy faced fish to Chimichanga, we can connect to the characters and get a sense of who they are from just how they look and move on the page. We can tell that Chimichanga really does care for the little girl Lula and that the villains in the story have no remorse. Their expressions are distinctive and feel real. The colors are rich and vibrant and seem to leap off the page. The backgrounds aren't always the most detailed, but that's ok they don't have to be. And when they count they are just as rich and sumptuous as the characters themselves. You could get lost looking at the dept and details of the characters themselves.

It's a fantastic little book that takes what could have been an average tale and spins it in a different direction. If you like the unusual and the different, if you like the adventurous then this book is for you.

STORY REVIEW: Although comic books are often primarily considered a medium for kids (or adults who should know better) it's actually pretty rare to find an 'all-ages' title out there these days. Most series from Marvel or DC may hold back on the F-bombs and ultra-violence but they often veer into the dark, the gritty, and the convoluted; as such they're often rated as being 'Teen+', and by and large I think that's appropriate.

With that said, I don't think anyone expected Eric Powell to make a kids' book. The majority of his work's centered around his creator-owned series 'The Goon' which - while excellent - is maybe not the right fit for a bedtime story. Outside of that, the closest Powell came otherwise was illustrating the Owlboy novels and a special edition of 'Huckleberry Finn'; both beautiful to look at, but nothing on a par with this, the brilliant 'Chimichanga'.

In broad strokes, this book is something of a fairy tale dipped in black comedy. It's star, Lula, is a cute l'il bearded girl who works in a travelling circus. One day, on her way back from buying a Mexican snack, she makes a deal with a flatulent old witch's request for a strand of her beard hair; the old crone can have the hair if Lula can have the old woman's "shiny rock." The rock turns out to be an egg for a truly weird kind of troll-monster which Lula names 'Chimichanga'. Lula and Chimi quickly become the best of friends, and as the story goes on they both get into their fair share of trouble and do their best to help each other out.

That's it really, in a nutshell, though 'Chimichanga' distances itself admirably from the usual twee tales of kids and creatures finding companionship. This is chiefly down to Eric Powell's unique sense of humour which pervades throughout, in much the same way as it does in the 'The Goon'. It's an almost Monty Python-esque blend of the surreal, the silly and the grotesque, with fart jokes and satire sitting comfortably together. There's laughs for both kids and adults, and neither gets talked down to; in that respect, 'Chimichanga' also carries the vibe of a Pixar film just waiting to happen.

The book also features a terrific cast. There's loveable friends: Lula works in a travelling Circus (a recurring motif of Powell's) that's home to all manner of bizarrely ordinary freaks such as Randy, "The Man With the Strength of a Slightly Larger Man." There's pantomime villains; Dagmar The Witch wants Lula's Beard Hair to help cure her flatulence, though she's soon superseded by a monstrous pharmaceutical company who are after Lula for similar ends. And then there's Lula and Chimichanga themselves, delightful characters who you immediately warm to and cherish. The Pixar comparison once again rears its head - there just isn't a bad or extraneous character anywhere in the bunch.

Finally, there's some good messages here for everyone. It's okay to be an outsider. Never trust mega-corporations. Nothing's insurmountable if you work together. Oh, and yeah...don't mess with the Chimichanga.

And the art...oh, the art. I'm biased - I frickin' love Eric Powell - but this book's a real thing of beauty. Powell's penciled illustrations bring even the smallest of details to life with warmth, humour and rugged dimensionality. Lula's cuter than a box of kittens (despite being a bearded girl) and Chimichanga's an oddly huggable monstrosity. Everything else similarly hits the mark. It's like Tim Burton-meets-Botticelli filtered through Richard Corben. Make sense? Maybe not (my fault, not yours ^_^) but that's probably because Powell has such a unique style of illustration that it's hard to describe. Still, it matches his authorial tone perfectly, and nowhere is that more pronounced than in Chimichanga.

In summary, this is just brilliant. The story, script and art style are all fantastic, and even having read the majority of Powell's output over the years, this still remains one of my favorite of his works, and of all Indie comics in general. Partly that's down to how well it works as a kooky kid's story, and partly that's down to it just being a terrific comic in general. I bought the single issues, I bought the graphic novel (three times - once for me, twice for friends) and I've got Lula tattooed on my right arm (as part of a comic book sleeve). It completely won me over. I'm sure that if you pick up a copy, it'll do exactly the same to you!

HARDBACK REVIEW: Thought I'd also offer a brief word on this Hardcover presentation. Well, it's pretty great; Dark Horse have a knack for presenting collected works in beautiful packages and that doesn't stop here. It's a slightly odd size - smaller than the original comics, somewhere between A5 and A4 - but it reads well in the hand and works better this way for kids. It has a strudy spine and the pages have been glued in well, ie. no gutter loss etc. Print quality's exemplary too, with thick glossy pages that feel great in the hand. Top work from Dark Horse!

Also of interest to existing Chimichanga fans is the fact this this edition of the story is presented in color! The original comics were printed in black and white to save on printing costs (Powell self-published the individual comic books) but here Powell has painstakingly re-painted each and every panel and the results are glorious. I love it in B & W, but this definitely feels like the way it was always meant to be seen.

Finally, the extras. They're few but they're welcome. There's a neat little self-contained one-page Lula story which hasn't been printed anywhere else and a selection of character concept drawings and notes from Powell himself. The best bit of these is seeing how Lula was developed - she started out as being quite a skinny little thing, but Powell found that the more chubby and rounded she became, the cuter she got. It's a nice snapshot of his development process and one that's rarely been seen anywhere else. More on this kinda thing in the Goon trades please!!!

It's a lovely package all-in-all, and one that serves the story delightfully.

Lula, a young bearded girl belonging to a travelling circus, barters a hair of her beard to a witch for a strange looking egg which hatches into a kind of troll dog (think Jeff Smith's rat creatures from "Bone") which she calls Chimichanga. The witch's potion turns out to cure excessive flatulence which she sells to an evil pharmaceutical company - the only trouble is the secret ingredient is Lula's beard hair!

I don't know any kids let alone what they read so I'm not sure if this will appeal to them or not, though the subject matter is harmless enough. Fans of "The Goon" like me will enjoy it but it doesn't measure up to Powell's usual standards of Goon-level genius.

It's not Powell's best book but it's enjoyable enough though I hope he doesn't pursue it just because I prefer his Goon stories better. Average script, fantastic artwork, and presented nicely in a small hardback design from Dark Horse, this quirky book will appeal to fans of Eric Powell's bizarre and brilliant works, and some kids too!

Il s'agit d'une histoire complète en 1 seul tome. Ce dernier regroupe les 3 épisodes initialement parus en noir & blanc en 2009/2010, écrits, dessinés et encrés par Eric Powell. Pour cette édition, ces épisodes ont bénéficié d'une mise en couleurs réalisée par Dave Stewart, et ont été complétés par une histoire courte de 10 pages mettant en scène les mêmes personnages, ainsi que par quelques pages de croquis.

Lula est une petite fille avec une barbe, au poil déjà bien noir et bien dru (une future femme à barbe, qui fait partie du cirque Wrinkle's traveling circus. Un jour, elle baguenaude aux environs du cirque et s'achète un chimichanga (sorte de pâtisserie proche des chichis). Alors qu'elle s'en retourne au cirque, Dagar la sorcière lui propose de lui acheter des poils de sa barbe (dont elle a besoin pour une de ses potions). En récompense, Lula choisit un œuf non éclos. Alors qu'elle approche du cirque, il en sort un gros monstre qu'elle appelle Chimichanga.

Eric Powell est avant tout connu dans le monde des comics pour sa série "The Goon", voir par exemple Chinatown and the mystery of Mr. Wicker . Il dispose d'un sens l'humour un peu tordu, d'un amour véritable pour les monstres, et d'une capacité surnaturelle à dessiner des monstres à l'allure à la fois repoussante et drôle au second degré. Le lecteur reconnait d'ailleurs immédiatement ces qualités dans cette curieuse histoire. Il y a à la fois de l'humour (la sorcière se prépare une potion pour diminuer la quantité de gaz digestifs dont elle est affligée), un amour véritable pour son personnage principal (une fillette à barbe), et un monstre aux yeux qui ont du mal à rester dans leur orbite.

Le monstre Chimichanga est une véritable réussite visuelle, un tour de force graphique associant une carrure impressionnante (il en impose par sa force), avec une exagération savoureuse (les dents de sa mâchoire inférieure en forme de triangles, son incapacité à maîtriser la place de ses yeux, ses manières d'enfant un peu primaire), et un comportement touchant (la manière dont il se laisse réprimander par Lula.

Lula est tout aussi réussie comme personnage. À nouveau, Eric Powell associe des éléments visuels inattendus. Lula est vraiment une petite fille (entre 5 et 7 ans), habillée avec une robe trop courte qui laisse voir sa culotte de type "Petit bateau" (blanche à gros pois rouge). Elle a un caractère charmant et très déterminé. Elle ne s'en laisse conter par personne et ne baisse pas les bras devant l'injustice. Sa barbe la met à part de enfants normaux, et l'a obligée à acquérir une certaine maturité. Elle sait se contenter de plaisirs simples (un bon chimichanga), mais aussi s'énerver ou pleurer. Elle est à la fois mignonne (avec sa petite fleur dans les cheveux) et impressionnante (sa façon de dire non).

Autour de ces 2 personnages centraux, Eric Powell crée une galerie de gugusses aussi impossibles que savoureux dont il a le secret. Il y a Heratio le poisson à visage de garçon dans son bocal qui craint la survenance d'une sécheresse. Il y a aussi le magnifique et étonnant Randy l'homme avec une force d'un individu légèrement plus grand que lui (sans parler d'Horace, l'homme qui a vu Elvis une fois).

Ces personnages évoluent dans une véritable intrigue mêlant une firme pharmaceutique aux pratiques douteuses, à la survie financière du cirque dont les artistes ne font pas rêver le spectateur. La narration est bien sûr loufoque, avec des gags qui font mouche, et un humour visuel d'une expressivité irrésistible. Contre toute attente, Powell intègre également un ou deux points de vue perspicaces sur les effets du capitalisme. Il y a cet exposé qui fait froid dans le dos sur le véritable objectif des entreprises pharmaceutiques, qui n'est pas de guérir les individus, mais de leur fourguer le plus possible de médicaments (d'où le sort peu enviable du chercheur qui a trouvé le remède contre le cancer).

L'histoire courte supplémentaire s'avère tout aussi réussie que l'histoire principale. Comme à son habitude, Dave Stewart effectue un travail tout en nuances, au service des dessins, sans se mettre en avant. Les pages de croquis permettent de se faire une petite idée du processus créatif de développement des personnages, par Eric Powell.

Bien sûr, cette histoire n'a rien d'indispensable et il est possible de vivre sans l'avoir lue. Toutefois les lecteurs de la série "The Goon" auraient tort de se priver de ce récit court (et pas cher) dans lequel ils retrouveront toute la verve visuelle et écrite d'Eric Powell. Les lecteurs de base seront ravis de découvrir un récit à la narration très personnelle, avec des dessins irrésistibles, un humour piquant sans être grinçant, adulte sans être cynique, et des personnages générant un degré d'empathie incroyable.
