So good that I am using it for my "course book"

I write on the same subject matter, but I've decided that this book will be my recommended "course book" to explain in a vivid and very effective manner how the brain works and then how to work it. I will use this book for this essential piece that helps build what I call "The Only Sure Path To The Greatest Life" and for my upcoming book called, tentatively, Smart (and easy) Self Control.

It is very understandable, very usable, and excellently written.

I've read many, many, many books on the brain, emotions, behaviors, but I would say this is one of the best overall and, I think, the best for most people to read and learn from - and to implement from. I've taken the liberty on my site of doing an overview chart of the functions and characteristics of these three brains, which I think will help people to understand better how the pieces fit together.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who needs to learn how the brain operates and how to operate it - which should be every human on the planet.

This book has helped me so much in EVERY ASPECT of my life, time and time again.

If you are struggling in one or more relationships -- if you are unhappy with how you behave sometimes -- or if you are merely curious about why we lose our temper when we do: read this book. The insights are profound, the message highly responsible (the fate of souls is at stake). The book represents a modern scientist's understanding of the human condition and, as such, it is not comprehensive: yet it is also compatible with the Rousseauan grasp of amour-propre (ourselves as beings wanting the esteem of other beings) and amour de soi (ourselves as beings loving ourselves and others with a kind of innocent benevolence). In any case, it's a book well worth reading.

The scientific explanation for mind vs heart situations

There are two phrases, among others, that I like to live by. The first is "if you don't like something change it, if you can't change it change your attitude towards it." And the second one is "you can't control how you feel, but you can control how you react to it." These two phrases have Chimp Paradox written all over it, and this book is pretty much the great elaboration of the phrases.

Derive his fact-based theories from neurological researches and decades of experience, Prof Steve Peters analyses the mechanism of the brain between the Frontal (the logical Human), the Limbic (the emotional Chimp) and Parietal (the memory-storing Computer), and how different functions of these 3 can conflict and/or complement each others to produce our thinking process and decision making process.

Surprisingly, for such a complex subject matter this book is really a light reading, which is written in a simple and concise way using easy to digest symbols, diagrams and bullet points. But yet, when I tried to read more on neuobiology as a follow up, I can somehow keep up with the complicated and serious stuff thanks to the understanding from this book.

It is by far the book that I highlighted the most, with every single line seems to be important, and it is so psychologically spot on that it feels like it is tailored on the conflicts between my own Human and Chimp. It also gives me huge understanding on how to differentiate between the Human and the Chimp in people around me (and how to engage to them accordingly), and it even has given me a clear and simple solutions to some of my, my family's, and friends' real problems. 5 stars!

Good information with too much repetition

Some very good insights and ideas. Mostly promoting replacing negative thoughts with effective "self talk" to improve your life. My only criticism is that the author takes FOREVER to get to the point. Way, way too much redundant information. The book could be 1/4 the length and get the point across much sooner.

This is by far the best book I have ever read to explain all the "chatter" in ones head. Having three personas to relate to, Chimp, Human and Computer has truly changed my life. I am now well aware of "who/what" is making the fuss and better able to change my negative thoughts. My husband is now reading the book and when either of us start to 'over-react" one word is spoken, Chimp, and we know what to do. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to "manage" old behavior in order to create a more peaceful life.
