Reading the Thanks list in the Foreword to Jonathan Story's superb coverage of what it takes to do business in China, tells you a lot about the book. The list reads like a who is who of global companies and their chairmen, CEO's, general managers and senior executives operating in China.
Diving into the book itself is about as close to living the real thing as you can get, and the experience of the author and his sources will be of invaluable help to those already on the ground there, as well as these planning to do so.
Readers not only learn what to expect, and what to do (and not to do), but even more importantly they will come away from reading the book with a much deeper understanding of why things are evolving as they are. Buy it. Read it. Learn from it. Enjoy it. It will be one of the best investments in China that you can make.

There are lots and lots of books on China, many very good, some not so good. But Jonathan Story's stands out as quite unique. His earlier publication on China, China: The Race to Market, which appeared in 2003, was a sweeping and penetrating bird's eye-view of mainly macro developments in the years since the reforms of the lat 1970s. China Uncovered is very much of a worm's eye-view. On the basis of a massive number of interviews with a multiplicity of both Chinese and foreign actors on the China stage, Story gives a really incisive analysis of the policy and decision making process in China, the drivers, and with powerful insights on the implications for doing business in China. Chinese friends and colleagues have told me how very useful they find the book! This is a great accolade.
The transformation of the global economy that China is driving and will continue to drive requires learning and adjustment on the part of Western business executives, policy makers, the media and academics. China Uncovered is a highly valuable source to that end.
