This engaging book is most informative and revealing book I've read on similar topics. Studies on China's investment in Europe is relatively scarce, and this book came right at the moment when many important changes take place in Europe. There is no doubt that China is getting more and more involved in Europe. This book, with its up to day data and an in-depth discussion of China's political atmosphere and traditions, uncovers the roles of different sectors, like private companies, SOE and etc. The authors of this amazing book also have a very deep understanding of the One Belt One Road project, which will definitely have a huge influence on Europe and China as the project becoming more developed.
Scholars who are interested in China-Europe relations will definitely enjoy reading this book that was rigorously written. Businessmen, especially businessmen that have cooperation with Chinese companies, will gain many useful business insights from this book. Anyone that is interested in China as a global participant can't miss the detailed information and in-depth analysis provided in this book.
Overall, highly recommended!

Review
From Beijing’s involvement in the Greek financial crisis to the grand One Belt, One Road” project to link China with Europe, we are seeing the early steps on what is sure to be a fascinating and historically significant journey for which Le Corre and Sepulchre have provided an indispensable guidebook.
Robert Kagan, Brookings Institution and author, Of Paradise and Power:
America and Europe in the New World Order
Le Corre and Sepulchre succeed in exposing a fairy tale. From the energy sector and transport and telecommunications to even buying up Pizza Express, China has thus huffed and puffed to gain an in” to the EU’s gingerbread house.
Karel De Gucht, former European Commissioner for Trade
This book could not come at a better time. Chinese investment into the EU rose by 40% in 2015, China’s steel overcapacity has forced the recent closure of three plants in Britain, and ChemChina is in the process of the largest overseas acquisition by a Chinese company. A timely must-read.
Jörg Wuttke, President, European Union Chamber of Commerce in China
The authors have unearthed fascinating new details of China’s rapidly expanding economic footprint across Europe that will come as a surprise to most readers. This excellent volume should be read by everyone who needs to know about China’s growing global role.
David Shambaugh, George Washington University, and author of China Goes Global: The Partial Power
Le Corre and Sepulchre have done an excellent job describing and analyzing the European investment dimension of globalization with Chinese characteristics.” Their book is current and timely, informative and reasoned, and perceptively thoughtful.
Robert B. Zoellick, former President of the World Bank, U.S. Trade Representative, and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State

Personally I like this book very much and would recommend it as a ¨guidebook¨ to anyone who is interested in the history and the latest development of Chinese investment in Europe. In my opinion, this book should also be considered as a must-read for any Chinese business man planning to invest in Europe in that both successful experiences and avoidable errors are presented by the authors. One of the many reasons I like this book is that it provides a panorama in a well structured way-one can either read it from the very beginning or jump to any chapter that he or he is most interested in (in my case, I first read Chapter Five and Seven because I am most interested in the culture and soft power-related topics). Another impressive feature of the book is the succinct but detailed charts and table, which helps readers to grasp the main ideas conveyed by the data at the first sight.

The author provides the readers with a detailed review about Chinese investment in European countries over the recent decades accompanied by their own opinions of this phenomenon, which is refreshing to both foreign and Chinese readers. Students and researchers dedicated to Chinese economics, business and finance study may find this book very useful.

Poorly researched and written, perhaps in China.

China had $3.56 trillion in reserves as of September 2015. Between 2002 and 2014, annual Chinese investment abroad went from $2.1 billion to $130 billion. Many foreign corporations had had made China one of their principal targets in the 1980s and 1990s are concluding that the Chinese market is no longer what it once seemed to be. In April 2015, Xi Jinping visited Islamabad and announced China would invest $46 billion in infrastructure, much for an 'economic corridor' of roads, railways and pipelines along 1,800 miles to the Pakistani port of Gwadar - giving China land access to the Indian Ocean. If realized, Chinese investment in Pakistan will greatly exceed total U.S. investment in the country. Previously Beijing had announced the $100 billion Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (57 countries among its founding members, including the U.K., Germany, France, Italy, and Poland), along with South Korea and Australia. This new bank will cooperate and compete with the World Bank, the IMF, and the Asian Development Bank - organizations controlled by the West and Japan.

With the recent surge in Chinese investment in Europe under China’s “Going Abroad” strategy to solve its industrial overcapacity, this book could not have come at a better time. Under the “One Belt One Road” project, China has engaged in a series of infrastructure construction projects in Central Asia and Eastern Europe, with the ultimate aim, as the authors correctly point out, to reach the markets of Western Europe. Indeed, we have already seen a rising number of mergers and acquisitions between Chinese and European companies, though with mixed results.
The book provides careful analysis of exemplary deals in various sectors backed with substantial data and on-the-ground research. It paints an accurate and comprehensive picture of China’s expanding commercial presence in major European countries. The discussion also extends beyond facts and data of recent deals. The emphasis is put on the cultural aspect of the investment. In this regard, the authors put forward original proposals for the advantages and challenges of China’s expansion of investment. This I think is the unique contribution of this book, that our assessment of the current commercial reality is enlightened with a lively dimension. Thanks to the authors’ long time personal observations and experiences, we are able to get a glimpse into the cultural beliefs and practices of Chinese business leaders, which are extremely useful in our projection of future business and political trends.
