Product Description

Chinese Money Plant

Chinese Money Plant

The Chinese Money Plant, also known as the missionary plant, lefse plant, pancake plant, UFO plant or just pilea (short for its scientific name of Pilea peperomioides) is originally from the southwestern Yunnan province of China. Popular lore maintains that a Norwegian missionary, Agnar Espegren, took cuttings home with him in the 1940s, and shared them with friends and family. Those plants were spread throughout Scandinavia, and eventually the world, as people passed cutting between friends.

Where to Grow

Light-wise, the best situation for a Chinese money plant is bright light, with no direct sunlight. Direct sun scorches leaves, and light shade may encourage larger leaves. They're said to be hardy down to freezing, and a period of cool temperatures will make them more likely to produce their tiny white flowers on pink stems.

Care and Maintenance

The Chinese money plant prefers a well-draining potting soil, and a pot with drainage holes is necessary. The soil needs to mostly dry out between waterings, with more watering required in warmer, sunnier weather. If the leaves start to look slightly droopy, that's a sign that the plant needs water. To keep your Chinese money plant nicely shaped, rotate it at least once a week to prevent it from getting lopsided. The large leaves tend to accumulate dust, so these plants benefit from regular showers, or at least wiping down of their leaves. Treat monthly with an all-purpose plant fertilizer during the spring and summer growing seasons. You may also want to put your plant outdoors as temperatures warm, but, again, take care to keep it out of direct sunlight.

3.0 out of 5 stars 50/50 on whether your plant is healthy or not
By Amazon Customer on December 2, 2022
My plant came in very wet soil. One leaf was entirely black and dead. Another leaf was not connected to the plant but seemed recently broken off. (I am attempting to propagate that leaf.) What was left of my plant were three big "doing okay" leaves and two small new leaves. (One of which had a snapped stem.) Overall, it's disappointing because it arrived pretty pathetic and needed work upon delivery. But hey, at least I now own this plant and can attempt to turn it into a beautiful thriving pilea with some care. (Oh I will say that this plant had a lot of roots and seems it was a strong happy plant before it was sent to me so I have some hope that it will recover. Based on other reviews, as well as my personal experience, this buy is very much 50/50 on if you will receive a salvageable plant. I'd say it's worth a shot because if your plant arrives dead you can get a refund from what I've seen.

1.0 out of 5 stars Arrived with 3 leaves that were dead in a day or two (10 days in transit/Seller was very nice)
By Brett Baxter on August 1, 2020
It came with mostly all leaves off the plant and in the plastic. It only came with 3 small leaves and I think They died or fell off the day after the 2nd photo. My latest photo shows how pitiful it is. I have tried to get it to come back and take, but it just won't sprout anything. If you're not close to wherever this company ships from, I don't recommend. It took 10 days in transit to get to me. I'm sure that's what killed this little guy. I've bought plans from Amazon before, but through a company close to me and no issues. They were listed seller again but then when order was placed it said fulfilling by 9green. I'm assuming they're on west coast and wouldn't of ordered if I knew that. I think Amazon should start showing where these places ship. I would of paid a few extra bucks to get here, although shipping was almost as much as this plant already. The seller close to me usually arrives in a day or 2. 10 days is unacceptable. Hope you can recoup funds from the shipper, as I think this is mainly their fault. Although, the plant was pretty sad too. I would give a better review but what I received looks nothing like the photo and what's being advertised. Although I did see reviews where some people got these huge plants and others smaller ones. Should be noted if that happens during certain seasons or something. Sorry, just have to give this one a bad review and that's not assists fair. Hope those looking read this all. Make sure you're close for SHIPPING...Maybe ask the size that's coming too. I've learned my lesson on plants with this one. Ask seller questions before bugging
