Traditional Chinese medicine goes back over 3,000 years. It was not developed by any particular individual; rather, it grew out of the necessity of maintaining good health among the Chinese people. The ancient Chinese, like all of us, had to struggle against diseases in order to stay in good health. In the process, they came to see the benefits of consuming herbs (known as Chinese herbology today), inserting needles in the body (known as Chinese acupuncture today), eating the right foods (known as Chinese food cures today), massaging the body (knows as Chinese manipulative therapy today) and exercising the body (known as qi-gong and tai-ji).

Today, traditional Chinese medicine is practiced in China side by side with modern Western medicine. There are as many hospitals of traditional Chinese medicine as modern hospitals of Western medicine. From the Chinese point of view, traditional Chinese medicine is on an equal footing with Western medicine.

You may ask why we need traditional Chinese medicine when modern, scientific medicine is available to all of us. The reason is that many diseases and ailments that cannot be cured by Western medicine can be treated by traditional Chinese medicine successfully. It is a fact that many patients experience instant relief of pain when treated with Chinese acupuncture, which cannot be achieved by Western medicine. In addition, traditional Chinese medicine has proven superior to Western medicine in the treatment of skin, liver and kidneys diseases, as well as many other diseases.

If you are interested in traditional chinese medicine(TCM), you will definitely love this book! Firstly, its such a thick book with tons of information. There are several sections in the book. There is a section where he lists out diagnostic of conditions and how to trace it to the cause of the problem (eg. kidney deficiency in yin; or heart and kidney not communicating, or heat in lungs etc). Then there is another section which lists the natural properties of each food (almost any kind of food you can think of, from duck eggs to strawberry, gancao(herb) to mulberry, honey to rice. Another section he talks about the origin of each herb, and what the herb is used for (eg treating false fire condition). Great book! I am buying another one for my mum to read!

Dr. Lu does a great job at tabulating and categorizing food cures for TCM diagnosed conditions. However, his chapters on TCM theory (Taoism, ying/yang) and method of diagnosis is far too basic to give any real help (they come acrossed as an exploded outline rather than a meaningful paragraph with "meat" in it). In addition, while he identifies foods for a condition, he offers almost no recipes or means of making these foods actually a meal (I'm not into eating raw pork kidney). At times, I felt I was reading an author's notes and outline for a great book with lots of missing information and information that was not cross checked before publication (The index has problems). Frequently food is listed as yin energy on one page and yang energy on another page without explanation. Also, there is no explanation of the titles and keys in the tables (Tonic verses Regulatory). Some tables repeat information without explanation (as if the publisher didn't understand what the author's intent was for having the two different tables) Now those are pretty easy terms to understand but it was necessary for me to read two other TCM books to really appreciate some of the information in this book. At least for me, this book is a "Buy" but only with the condition to also buy another book (like D. Reid's) on the introduction of TCM and a Chinese healing cookbook on how to actually take the foods and make them meals.

Other books have come out on the topic of Chinese cures - but this is the most comprehensive yet, created by world-famous practitioner Dr. Henry C. Lu who uses his expertise to explain both Chinese medicine and its underlying philosophy of health and illness. Treatments are organized by complaints and include easy reference for treatment and cure and advice on hundreds of foods and herbs as well. Literally hundreds of Chinese herbs and their uses receive clear, specific mention; right down to the formulas and potions which make them useful. Very highly recommended: a must for any serious herbal treatment collection.

THIS BOOK IS HUGE !!! --- And, Amazon's pricing for this book is not huge !!! So, for the right person, this could be considered a well-priced book. But, in our opinion, really the person to read this book needs to be not only ready for almost a text-book discussion of the huge variety of topics covered, but really ready for not an easy read. We kept one of these books for our own extensive libraries, and we gifted the balance, but to families and friends, who either have an already beginning awareness of Chinese Natural Cures and Traditional Methods, or others who are seriously either studying curative topics or are in traditional or alternative healing schools or are studying to learn other facets of the traditional and alternative medical worlds, and we have a number of such individuals within our families and friends, so finding people to appreciate this book, for us, was not difficult. But, we have other books in our libraries, not necessarily to do with Chinese Cures, but to do with traditional symptoms and diagnoses discussions, and western world traditional and alternative med discussions and knowledge, etc., which may be picked up and read widely by many people, and we really feel that this book is not a casual book to pick up and sift through, so we do not wish to push anyone away from this book, as it has its values to it, but we really feel the reader needs to be of serious mind or mayhaps be disappointed with its more schoolish presentations. We wish you all many blessings in your various book journeys.

Very impressive and even better if the herb illustration drawings come with actual photographs. If the herbal formula titles also carry their Chinese characters in them, I can't fault this wonderful book. Overall, money well spent.

Saw this same book in hardcover at my chiropractor's office and after scanning it a few minutes I knew it was destined for my own library. Haven't read much of it yet, but the layout and clarity is great; the author's explanations are very thorough and authoritative, without being stuffy or arrogant. My only regret is that the font is rather small, and the color of the print is pale...maybe new glasses will help. Otherwise, in my opinion, any person interested in alternative medicine, herbal therapies and TCM should add this to the bookshelf.
