About the Author

Qin Xue Herzberg: Qin Xue Herzberg is a native speaker of Chinese and a graduate of Beijing Normal University in Chinese Language and Literature. For the past twelve years she has been the upper-level Chinese language professor at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. For the past several decades she has taught Chinese to Americans of all ages. She and her husband, Larry, have coauthored books on culture (China Survival Guide) and language (Basic Patterns of Chinese Grammar) and are experts on interpreting Chinese culture for Western travelers, students, and Sinophiles.

Larry Herzberg: Larry Herzberg studied Chinese for five years at Vanderbilt University before doing his Master's and Ph.D. work in Chinese Language and Literature at Indiana University. In 1980 he founded the Chinese Language Program at Albion College and then did the same at Calvin College in 1984. For the past three decades he has taught the Chinese language at the college level. In 2011 he received the Presidential Award for Exemplary Teaching, Calvin College's highest honor to professors. He and his wife, Qin, have coauthored books on culture (China Survival Guide) and language (Basic Patterns of Chinese Grammar) and are experts on interpreting Chinese culture for Western travelers, students, and Sinophiles.

Please note! I have no quarrel with the content of this book. The problem is with "Amazon Kindle" edition!
Amazon boldly claims in its promotions:
"Buy once, read everywhere. Sign in with an Amazon account, and sync Kindle books across all your devices that have the Kindle app installed and across any Kindle device."
Not true at all!
When shopping for books, you may have noticed a tiny clickable link buried down where it gives the book's description (number of pages etc.) The link says "Available on these devices". I've clicked that link from time to time and it just seems to be yet another Kindle advertisement bragging about how many types of devices have Kindle applications. Well, apparently that is not the case. If you click the link for this particular link, it lists just about every type of device except Microsoft Windows and iPhones.
hmmmmmm. "Across all your devices"? Nope! I wonder how many other hidden traps Amazon has out there that keep Amazon supplied content from running on Amazon software!
I will also point out that when I bring up this title in my Amazon account there is a message that says: "You already own this item. Read anytime on your Kindle apps and devices." And if you click the link for the word "apps" it brings up a screen that specifically lists Windows. Caveat emptor! (Let the buyer beware!)

This book explains a lot of what the Chinese culture is about. Everything from why some of the more rural areas hold particular animals in esteem or disdain; and how the cultural mindset of 'the greater good' is reflected in the way they conduct their lives. Entertaining and informative.
