The heel counter/cup at the back of the boot curves in and digs into the back of my heel/ankle and caused blisters. There is no back stay (strip of leather stitched to the back of the boot inside the shaft) to stiffen that part and to assist in sliding the foot in and out of the boot. There are back stays in the other leather lined boots and prevents the top of the counter from digging into the ankle.
Unlike my other Chippewas, this pair has a rather narrow opening at the top of the shaft so getting in and out is cumbersome and I have to undo the buckle at the top of the shaft.
The fit runs slightly large so a medium thickness boot sock is essential. These boots are not as large as my other Chippewas that allow the addition of a gel sole that greatly improves comfort. I inserted thin SOFCOMFORT insoles that improved the fit and now they are snug.
Breakdown of my assessment based on 5 stars as best:
5* Looks & appearance
4* Quality of construction
4* Quality of materials
4* Size & fit
2* Comfort
3* Value for money
I gave 3* overall because I weight heavily on comfort. Value for money would be higher if they were comfortable and I would get more use out of them. An item has little value if I cannot use it for its intended purpose.
If you are looking for a biker's boot, go for Chippewa's Harness Boots. They are leather lined, heavier and supremely comfortable. If you prefer the styling of the Engineer Boot go for the 17" High Shines as they too are leather lined and have a steel toe which compromises comfort somewhat. If you don't like the shine, that can be removed with nail polish remover.
3 JAN 2014 UPDATE
The boots are now quite comfortable after thoroughly broken in. No more blisters. The shaft is still narrow and my socks still get the black color stains from the boots' interior. I would elevate my comfort rating to 3.5 stars as getting them off is still a hassle.
I will start by saying what I love about these boots and why I own five pairs.
There is an age-old argument of the original engineering boot. Looking at what Brando and his cronies wore in 'The Wild One' they could be either Red Wing, Buco or Chippewa. What was clear, was that the front was shallow and clearly did not have a protective toe. Since all my Chippwa engineers have steel toes, I felt this would make a change. You need quite a shallow instep to wear Red Wings, so Chippewa also scores on its generous EE fitting. After 25 years of wearing various makes of engineering boots, Frye, Walker, Carolina and mostly Georgia, I still think Chippewa are the definitive make. When I win The National Lottery I will travel to Portland Oregon and get a pair of Wesco engineers built, rather like my set of Langlitz Leathers.
In 2000, changing from the now Chinese made Georgia boot, to Chippewa, you could feel the quality. The sole had a slight spring in the step, lightly cushioned compared to cheaper types. I guess the use of Vibram soles paid off. The lining on the lower last of the boots also makes for extra comfort and promotes support to the foot. I have covered thousands of miles both motorcycle and pedestrian and the comfort is second to none. As for looks, I have had many people at various biker rallies and Joe Public ask about them, the quality just shines through. After the waxy finish has worn, they can be polished to a sheen if desired and Chippewa are now also offering a repair service.
The only recent change that has ired me, is the dressy, chunky buckles they now fit, funny how such a small change can ruin the classic aesthetic of a design that should be left alone. I have never had an earlier type buckle break on me, heavens knows why this tacky type is now fitted.
Now for the reason for the one-star rating.....................
I was bought a pair as a gift from a relative visiting the US. Back in the UK, I excitedly opened the box and.....disaster. The leather hides did not match and upon checking the serial numbers, this was not some mix-up. These abominations had actually got past quality control and were identically stamped. The leather was soft and yielding and lost all shape when pulled on. I though I was wearing a pair of 'Ugh' boots. To worsen matters, the leather on one of the stovepipe legs was creased and of such bad quality, it folded under its own weight, despite being new.
I was so incensed, I immediately called Amazon who were superb. After a partial generous refund, I kept the boots for working in the garden. In shorts. At night. When drunk. Lying down.
I used to get my Chippewas from a company who specialised in what was know as 'seconds' boots that had failed quality control and were sold at a greatly reduce price. These would come firmly in that category. Come on Justin Boots, get your act together! How did these pair of duffers slip the net? Reading other unsatisfied reviews, it seems someone is not doing their job properly at Chippewa. On a final note, I have written various e-mails to Chippewa, concerning other matters, all unanswered.
If anyone has had a bad pair, persevere and try another pair, you may be really surprised at how they vary.
Chippewa engineering boots..............................great product, poor quality control............
Thing is, I ordered my normal boot size (a 7 in most unlined boots, IE Clarks, Red Wing, etc.) and I couldn't even get my foot into the footbed.
This is a huge bummer, because it seems like the footbed would be just right for my foot.
I don't write reviews often, so I'm not sure if I can, but I'd love to update this review after I receive my new order with sizes 7.5 and 8.
Figure if my boot size doesn't fit, maybe my sneaker size will.
Overall, if you're sure of your size in Chippewas and are considering this boot, then go for it. I can't foresee you being disappointed with the workmanship.
EDIT: So I tried on the 8s and 7.5s. My feet got into both of them with limited struggling, with the 7.5s feeling much better.
I still have some room for wool socks, so I guess thats a plus, but I can't help but feel that the 7s would've been a better fit.
Maybe sometime down the road I'll unload the 7.5s and go for 7s again, in hopes that the opening will be a smidge wider, or the leather will be a bit softer, or the instep will be a bit roomier, etc. etc.
However, now that I've got a pair on my feet, I can definitely verify the radness. Much happier with them now.
