Worked surprisingly well for holding several books on a rustic beam. The shelf is only 9" deep and is a bit "warbly" with a little bit of a curve to it (it's from a barn that was almost 200 years old), so I was concerned about putting heavy books on it. These bookends were actually quite sturdy for as light weight as they are. At first I thought I wouldn't care for the curvy side either, but once I got them up on the shelf, I actually thought they looked fine. I figured if I didn't like them, I could glue on a small 5x7 board canvas painted with a design or accenting color on each end, but I actually like their sleekness.
