5.0 out of 5 stars This brings back memories... December 26, 2010

I always loved CYOA stories as a kid, so this let me relive my childhood a little. The difference, though, is that you get to customize almost everything about your dragon self (Name, scale color, gender, etc.)! Your stats change depending on how you handle a situation and those same stats can determine the amount of success for an action you pick (I had enough Disdain to ignore an effigy, but not enough Cunning to create a perfect magical trap to protect my hoard). This was quite fun, and I can't wait to 'play' it again.

EDIT: Please note, this is a role-playing story. While I love this kind of thing, your results may vary. It IS a little on the short side for a $5 price tag on the first run-through, but I think the replay potential for different endings makes up for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too little content December 21, 2010
This game is fun, but ends too quickly. For $5, I expected a lot more content... I completed it 3 times in 3 different ways in less than an hour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and easy diversion December 25, 2010
This is a fun game to play that I would recommend to anyone who loves choose-your-own-adventure books. Your choices affect the gameplay to a degree though the overall story progresses to a similar end regardless of the choices you make. I first discovered this game online at the Choice of Games website where it can be played for free, but I gladly purchased it for my Kindle so I can play on the go. I only gave it 4 stars though because, while enjoyable, this game lacks the depth and complexity of other games available from this company and others.

2.0 out of 5 stars You'd think I'd learn September 4, 2013

I loved the old "choose your own adventure" books that came out in the 1980's. They were fun as there were always a multitude of possible endings and it could take time to discover how to travel to each page in the book. These books were always great fun.

Unfortunately, and I've noted this in my reviews of other Choice "books", these stories are not by my standards true "choose your own adventure" tales. Yes, the reader is offered a number of multiple choice selections that can change the plot, but the changes are limited. Instead of a choice sending you down a vastly different path, the choices you make here are turned into an invisible score and cause minor variations to the feedback. No matter what you choose the chapters go in the same order, with a very limited set of possibilities. At the end you see a score page that describes how your choices played out.

This ends up limiting these "games' to only one or two playthroughs. They can be interesting one time, but after that, they simply become a game of guessing how the writers scored each possible answer.

I enjoyed these games the first 1-2 times, but by the time I tried this one the formula and format started to frustrate me. I have decided that I will no longer purchase these because they are not what I'm looking for in this kind of reader controlled story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Use of the Kindle March 23, 2011

I got this game to see how Kindle would handle interactive or branching fiction. I really like the concept and boy did I read a lot of Choose Your Adventures as a kid! I thought this one was pretty good, with some cute humor but also some adventure and wreaking havoc. After all, dragons do eat people! The text, in fact, did offer ample opportunities for dragons to eat a lot of people and pillage if the reader was so inclined. It could have tilted a little more in the serious direction but it could also have tilted more into the parody direction too, so it hits in the middle. The 2 dragony adventures I chose lasted long enough that I felt like I got my money's worth. I would definitely try more interactive stories like this for the Kindle.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good party game September 14, 2012
Verified Purchase
I'm an adult, so my expectations of a choose your own adventure game are probably unreasonably high. This game takes an hour or so of attentive playing to go through. It is addicting. After you have played through once making your own "best" decisions, you can play through again to make the meanest and the nicest and the smartest dragons you possibly can. You can play through to accomplish certain things at which you've already failed several times--figuring out how to let the queen live or or make friends with the high wizard or marry the black dragon. The game is in this sense addicting. You can replay it ten to fifteen times before you feel like you know every outcome. This will take a couple of days. After that, it's a great party game for family get-togethers. An adult can read, the kids can make the choices, and everyone can debate what might have happened.

I notice several previous reviewers says they paid too much at $5. Well, I only paid $2, and that was about right, so the publisher must read these reviews. Good to know!

3.0 out of 5 stars an OK way to pass a couple of hours July 13, 2011

I do like interactive books and this one was okay. I did enjoy trying different paths. I was a bit disappointed at a couple of places as it seemed that my choices made little, if any difference in the outcome of that particular section. The values assigned to changes in my character seemed a bit badly weighed out in one or two sections as well. Was fun for a couple of hours. Definitely worth 99 cents, but not any real long term replay value.

3.0 out of 5 stars It needs a bit more variety October 19, 2013
Verified Purchase
Before I get to my criticisms for this book, I have to admit one thing: I really enjoyed my first playthough of this game. The story was interesting, and I was ultimately satisfied with the ending. That first read through alone was definitely worth the $1.99 I paid.

That said, the reason why "Choice of the Dragon" only gets 3 stars from me is because it presents itself as a 'choose your own adventure' book, but the choices you make don't really affect the outcome. The story progressed in exactly the same way regardless of what choices you make. The differences it makes are barely noticeable, and only last for the duration of that particular choice. It doesn't matter if you choose to eat princesses or talk to them and let them free; at some point, an adventuring party will still come and try to slay you. It doesn't matter how infamous you are; at some point, a powerful wizard will still try to kill you.

I would have liked to see the consequences of my choices affect later choices in the game a bit more than they do now.
