What's more, I couldn't really see Terry as 19 and, while he's supposed to be super trained or something, how his friends had their power/skill or how they all met was not addressed. This is marked book one, but maybe there is a prequel out there or something? For sure, something is missing in this book, something important.
Lastly, I was not impressed with Loving's narration. It was too fast. This didn't bother me at first or when I listened to the sample, but it sure did as the book went on (and it sounded funny if I listened at .75x) and I just don't think he did a very good job at sounding natural.
I did very much appreciate the diverse cast and mechanically the writing was pretty good. Others may very well love this. I didn't. I saw how it could have been pretty good, but don't think it quite managed it.
Note: I received an audible code for the purchase of this book. I chose to listen to it and review it.
There are no sex scenes in this story, but there are some cuss words.
The story is well written, flows smoothly, is well explained, and will grab you from page one to the end.
It is a work of fiction and involves magic.
The characters are well written, well defined, and you can relate to them easiiy.
It has been 3 years since the Sixth Order that governed the use of magic wiped themselves to the very edge of extinction. Terry Howard, Acolyte of the Order of Midnight is doing his very best to survive in a world he simply does not understand. AT the age of 19 Terry is finally getting his feet under him. With his partner Gabriel, Terry has managed to find a way to turn his training into an income. Problems happen when Terry's ex,Carrie, brings them in to investigate an apparent suicide and his mentor Stanley surprises Terry with the announcement of his retirement. Now Terry is forced to take on his calling and make a choice.
This is a really good book as I have said. I recommend it to ages 14 on up.
I should note that after reading, I found there was an update to this that hadn't gotten onto my device. So it is possible it has been further polished since my reading.
While the language is vulgar and I would not recommend it to young people (under 16) for that reason and that is the only reason I did not give this book 5 stars. It is well written and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I do look forward to reading the remaining stories in this series and eagerly look forward to Book 2 of the Seven Keys Saga.
