This CD by Ólafur Arnalds & Alice Sara Ott is an extraordinary piece of work. If you are at all a fan of Chopin's music, you will find this hauntingly beautiful -- and also confusing. If you just "blind test" hearing the music, you will be haunted by the thought, "What is this???" It is familiar, but not quite. The musicians have taken the music of Chopin and adapted it for instruments other than piano or have made variations on the original, even when played on a piano. Hard-fast purists may object, but don't forget that Bach himself revisited and reused his own music sometimes for great effect.
I first learned of the music in ballet choreography by Amy Seiwert in her Imagery Company in the summer of 2019, and I quickly sought the CD. Before writing a review, I let the music rest and simmer for some time to see how it held up with time. Answer: Exquisite! It is hauntingly beautiful.
