Really enjoying this. Time out to have fun vicariously in a world where surfing the skies and real adventure are the thing. Lots of fun.

Song of the surfer is one of the favourite 2000ad stories of my youth and getting it all in one place if a thing of beauty.

Mr. I. C. G. Bell
3.0 out of 5 stars The wrong collection of strips
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 21, 2011
Warning: Contains Spoilers.

I agree with most of what G Meldron says but disgaree with his conclusions. I feel about this comic much as aI do about "The Complete Bad Company". Weak later strips demean the brilliant early content.

What I want in a Chopper volume is either all the Chopper stories or, better, everything leading up to and including "Song of the Surfer" but nothing after. Having everything after "Soul on Fire" but not much before makes for a profoundly unsatisfying collection.

In my view, the prefect Chopper volume would contain:

"Unamerican Graffiti" - Chopper's debut as 'King Scrawler' - Not present in this book.
"The Midnight Surfer" - Supersurf 7 - Not present in this book.
"Oz" - Choppers trip accross the badlands and Supersurf 10. - This is probably the strip most missed in this volume. Good art. Good story. - Not present in this book.

"Soul on Fire" - Chopper's impromptu race with Jug Macenzie. Present in this book.
"Song of the Surfer" - Supersurf 11 and Choppers death (or should have been). A pinnacle of 2000AD's output. Everything comes together perfectly in this strip: The art, the dark humour, the thrills, the emotional impact. Present in this volume.

And nothing else. If the book had stopped here, one could have forgotten 2000 AD's unfortunate "reanimation" of Chopper after his dramatically perfect and artistically correct death inches from the finishline of Supersurf 11. As it is, "Chopper Surf's Up" includes:

"Earth wind and Fire" - Garth Ennis's lacklustre, longwinded Chopper vs land grabbers twaddle.

"Dead Man's Twist" - Chopper's vision quest surf through treacherous ravines, with Martin Emond's distinctive artwork. Also by Ennis and better than "EW&F" but still nothing special.

"Funeral in Mega-City One" - An inane one-prog.

"Supersurf 13" - Very weak. A long pale shadow of "Song of the Surfer" with sickly art.

"The Big Meg" - John Wagner returns to a mature Chopper, who dodges Judges and lasers in a data heist strip that is surprsingly well drawn but otherwise contributes little beyond a good death for Jug McKenzie and happy ending for Shakespeare.

So a dissapointing collection given what it could have been. Perhaps they'll do a "Chopper: Complete" one day.
