About the Author

Richard Phillips was born in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1956. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1979 and qualified as an Army Ranger, going on to serve as an officer in the US Army. He earned a master’s degree in physics from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1989, completing his thesis work at Los Alamos National Laboratory. After working as a research associate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, he returned to the army to complete his tour of duty.

Today, he lives with his wife, Carol, in Phoenix, where he writes science-fiction thrillers and fantasy—including The Rho Agenda series (The Second Ship, Immune, and Wormhole), The Rho Agenda Inception series (Once Dead, Dead Wrong, and Dead Shift), and The Rho Agenda Assimilation series (The Kasari Nexus, The Altreian Enigma, and The Meridian Ascent). He is also the author of Mark of Fire and Prophecy’s Daughter, the first two books in the epic Endarian Prophecy fantasy novels.

My recommendation? Anything Richard Phillips writes is a must-read. The Endarian Prophecy is a departure for Phillips, one in which he's created everything and married fantasy, magic and science fiction. "Curse of the Chosen" is the third in the series that pits Carol, a young woman with promising magical abilities, against a demon-possessed antagonist determined to take over the world and kill anybody and everybody who stands in his way. Carol learned in the previous novel how to control her abilities and now she understands that the voices really are in her head, she just had to pay attention and tune out what she didn't want to hear. Her husband, an assassin known as Blade, remains a deadly ally. But the armies of Kragan are nearly upon the quickly built fortress her father and his small army have fashioned as a last stand. Her brother, the well-meaning but somewhat bloodthirsty Alan, has been relegated to what he thinks is a supporting role at the mountain village of their father's key allies. But they will all need every bit of luck and every sword and sorcerer if they are to survive. The book builds to a magnificent climax and battle, and that's where Phillips really shines. His descriptions are epic and worthy of the Song of Roland with a little Two Towers mixed in. I had trouble not reading this constantly after starting.

The Endarian Prophecy series continues to captivate me! Here in book #3, less prominent characters emerge as leading figures. Varied storylines blend as new relationships are forged and old ones renew. The undying presence of strong, sagacious women, in tantamount roles is well purveyed. Central to the story is the evolution of Alan, son of Lord Rafel, who is rendered the prophetic "Chosen" by the dogma of the Khan's people. Phillips also delves further into the Endarian realm as we follow Queen Elan's son, Galad, into battle, at the head of an intricate legion of time-shifters and mist-warriors. The reader's imagination is seized as a voyeur, entrenched in macabre conflict with these beloved characters, fighting lupine armies, wielders and unearthly beasts, in sweeping valleys clinging to mountain fortress cities. As with all well balanced stories, there is sacrifice, tragedy and triumph. So as GOT nears conclusion, with TV fantasy series in high demand, I can easily envision viewers enthralled by a mini-series interpretation of the Endarian Prophecy books. My favorite in this epic sequence so far, I give this book a high-five star rating.

I didn’t expect to enjoy this series so much and even almost didn’t continued after the first book. Not because it wasn’t good, I just have a huge reading list and while the first was pretty good I got caught up in a couple of other series before coming across the second book. The first and second books created some interesting characters and a rather unique story. Sometimes I feel like events have been passed over a bit too quickly and some information gets just a glancing mention. The character of Alan was one of those items that didn’t seem to getting much attention and I wondered why he was really even around. I was very pleasantly surprised to see him fleshed out and front and center in this book. I really enjoyed the story and how many things were tied together. I have some trouble really picturing the details of the battles but they are exciting nonetheless. And now, while I’m excited to start the fourth book I’m afraid it may be final in the series and I’m not ready to say good-bye to the Vale.

I thought that Curse of the Chosen was the last in a trilogy — a logical conclusion, since all of his Rho Agenda books were written in threes — but thankfully this book leaves open a continuance of the well-crafted storyline. Phillips is a master of weaving together the lives of meticulously detailed characters, and this volume will leave you hungry for resolution. May the Endarian Prophecy live on for as many books as possible!

I quite enjoyed the first two books as a bit of light reading while stuck at home, but this third volume did not advance the storyline much. It felt like a padded out couple of chapters. Like other reviewers I skipped large parts of the battle scenes.
The book is better written than many in this genre, but needs a good edit. If the whole series was cut to a trilogy it would be much better. As it is, I shall not bother with 4 and 5, remembering what happened to Game of Thrones!
