Editorial Reviews

Grandmaster Doc-Fai Wong has been teaching martial arts since 1968 in the San Francisco area. His instructor in San Francisco was the famous kung fu teacher Lau Bun. In Hong Kong, Grandmaster Wong was the first disciple of Great Grandmaster Hu Yuen-Chou and Grandmaster Wong Gong. Grandmaster Wong is the president of the Plum Blossom International Federation of C.L.F./T.C. and is a recognized leader worldwide in the martial arts. He is also a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and a California State certified Acupuncturist and Herbalist. He holds a doctorate degree in Allied Health Sciences and is a professor of the San Francisco City College system since 1974. Grandmaster Wong is the author of the books Choy Li Fut Kung Fu, Shaolin Five Animals Kung Fu and Tai Chi's Internal Secrets. He was awarded the Kung Fu Artist of the Year at the 1991 Black Belt Hall of Fame Awards. He writes a monthly martial art column and is a contributing editor for Inside Kung Fu magazine.  A Shaolin martial art system, Choy Li Fut was established over 160 years ago by its founder, Chan Heung in 1836. It is a southern Chinese martial art system with a strong northern influence as seen in the footwork. Chan Heung named the system after his teachers in martial arts, Choy Fok, Li Yao San and Fut for its Shaolin roots. Choy Li Fut is one of the most popular martial art styles of today. As a method of improving health and fitness, Choy Li Fut's long forms, done at full speed, provide excellent cardiovascular exercise. The movements are mainly long circular motions with a variety of fast moving footwork. Choy Li Fut contains both external and internal training. Almost every conceivable kung fu weapon is taught in Choy Li Fut.

My only problem with this DVD was that it doesn't want to play using Windows media player. It plays fine on the other programs I have, but on windows media player it refuses to play. WMP is the player I use most of the time so the only way to watch it on that would be to copy the DVD onto another disc. This could be a flaw with the copy process or a problem with the disc itself. I had thought about returning it, but as I was able to get the disc to work with other programs there was no reason. Other that that this was pretty much what I have come to expect from ESPY...a transfer of their original master for VHS onto DVD. The video quality is obviously geared for VHS but it still good and clear. As to the material itself I have always enjoyed Sifu Wong's demonstrations and he is one of the few instructors that includes the Chinese names of the techniques as he performs the movements of the set. Despite English being his second language his instructions are always clear and easily understood. So while the content was good and deserved a four, the problem with the disc rated a two so I split the difference with the htree stars.

Very good content. Video quality is dated (VCR image quality). Would be a great product if remastered as the content of this video is good for training or as a refresher. Be careful when ordering multiple discs in this video series. The seller charges shipping for each video and ships it in one shipping envelope.
