Good things come in small packages--beautiful work

This is Richard Barron's translation of one of Longchenpa's famous Seven Treasuries--perhaps the greatest set of Dzogchen works. It's the 2nd translation in the series. The others translated so far are: The Precious Treasury of the Way of Abiding: Original Title Gnas Lugs Mdzod,The Precious Treasury of Pith Instructions (The Seven Treasuries Series), & The Precious Treasury of Philosophical Systems. The 3 yet to be translated are: The Precious Treasury Of Sublime Spiritual Approach, The Precious Treasury To Fulfill One's Wishes, & The Precious Treasury Of Words & Their Meanings. Immediately after publishing this work, Barron published Longchen Rabjam's self-commentary on it a Treasure Trove of Scriptural Transmission: A Commentary on the Precious Treasure of the Basic Space of Phenomena which embeds the basic text ("The Basic Space of Phenomena"). Interestingly, Schmidt translated the "Treasure Trove" sometime earlier in manuscript=The Scriptural Treasury. This is the Commentary on the First Chapter of "The Precious Treasury of Dharmadhaatu"". The "Basic Space of Phenomena" is awesome in itself & the commentary adds many excerpts from numerous Tantras, esp. "The All-Creating Monarch," published as The Supreme Source: The Fundamental Tantra of the Dzogchen Semde. All of these books are of great value to Dzogchen students/practitioners.

While the self-commentary adds much, it is also less flowing, poetic, & pristine in a way. I find it beneficial to read the text separately from the self-commentary as well. Per Patrul Rinpoche's, "Exhortation" (pp. 446-7 in "The Treasure Trove") "The Treasury of the Basic Space of Phenomena" is the quintessence of the dharma...it is equal to the presence of the omniscient lama. [i.e. to Longchenpa himself] Some of my favorite quotes in this book: p. 69: "To hold that one cannot realize the inexpressible without relying on specific means to characterize it is a fool's attitude" & pp. 115-7: "Freedom lies in the transcendence of extremes...in the transcendence of conceptual frameworks...in the transcendence of conceptual bias."

This is probably one of the best and essential books ever written for those who have explored the far reaches of buddhism. The basis reaches beyond buddhism in its space of awareness. I only regret it is out of print, although I have contacted Padma regarding this.
My other 2 essential reads are Zen teaching of Bodhidharma by Red Pine, and Ocean of Eloquence by Psong Kha Pa.

These would be my top three out of a vast library of buddhist books. Always good.

Within the context of emptiness that is inherent
in dreams and magical illusions,those who are
unwise and immature are bound by fixation, but
those who are conscious of the nature of these
cannot be bound. Likewise, people who lack
wisdom concerning ineffability are bound by
fixation on identity and so are caught up in
samsara, while wise people who are immersed in
genuine being-- aware of thatness and decisive in
the very moment about
ineffability-- are free within the expanse, the
nature of phenomena in which there is
no causality.
In the awakened nature of mind, which can be
neither affirmed nor denied,
timeless awareness without dualistic perception
abides as a matter of course.
In naked awareness, involving no causality,
abides the unique sphere that is neither
positive nor negative. In unobstructed
awareness, without limit or center, the wholly
positive enlightened intent of dharmakaya abides
as a matter of course.
In enlightenment--self-knowing awareness, the
heart essence of ineffability-- the totally pure
and nonreferential intent of victorious ones
is clearly evident.
As the natural manifestations of awareness,
ineffable phenomena arise as its unceasing
display
for those immersed in the genuine nature of
illusoriness. They decide that these are
ineffable even as they arise and do not react in
the slightest with acceptance or rejection. They
abide in supreme imperturbable rest, which is
carefree
with a deep inner spaciousness.
The immature, fooled by what is ineffable, are
like deer pursuing a mirage of water for which
they thirst. Since they invest meaning in
conventional labels--the language
of confusion-- they are hampered in their
respective philosophies, misconstruing
phenomena as having identity.
Since the eight developmental approaches do not
avoid the pitfall of ordinary mind,
the genuine and ultimate heart essence is not
seen. Atiyoga--basic space transcending
phenomena, completely
ineffable--is of the nature of space.
Moment by moment, there is no wavering from
dharmakaya, the natural place of rest.
Throughout the vastness of original basic space,
there is spontaneous presence in supremely
blissful and natural rest. If you do not realize
secret awareness--that which is ultimately
meaningful in enlightened intent-- you will never
be freed by that which entails deliberate effort.
Don't you know that anything composite is
impermanent and subject to disintegration?
How can the tight and intricate knot of ordinary
body, speech, and mind
touch upon the ultimate meaning of the
indestructible heart essence? This being so, if
you desire what is sublimely meaningful-- the way
of abiding-- put aside all factors that, like so
many childish games, fetter and exhaust you
physically, verbally, and mentally. The nature
of ineffability, the expanse free of
elaboration, is the nature of phenomena--natural
great perfection. In expansiveness beyond
imagination, in which nothing
need be done,
behold the ultimate meaning of supreme,
uncontrived evenness. Since this is beyond
causality and deliberate effort, be decisive.
Self-knowing awareness, involving no perception
of outer object
and inner subject,
has no time or place and is beyond phenomena
that originate or cease.
It is pure like space, and so entails no
provisional spiritual approach. Since all
thoughts of this as ultimately existent are
mistaken, avoid any pitfall or obscuration that
comes from misconstruing
phenomena as having identity.
In the indivisible and wholly positive realm, be
decisive in supreme and infinite emptiness.

Expression beyond expression [there is no beyond.] Every word ineffable. Every differentiation immaculate emptiness. Should anybody opine that non-duality is non-conceptual, present them with this burgeoning text, rife with unerring instantiation. The empty matrix of space immediately presented, rolled out with spinning generosity as gargantuan mind. Flabbergasting. Longchen Rabjam, plugged-in to the unexcelled Buddha-field. He taps, even now, the infinite, non-existent body of Samantabhadra. And here it pours its vapid, starry nectar. This text is the non-different location of mind, self coincident with its reading, self coincident with all this world; the aligned, the very graffiti wall of space. The bus, the truck, the Rolls-Royce, the immediate conveyor.
