I have been researching early Christianity, because it does seem like the original teachings of Jesus have been lost to us. The findings of Nag Hammadi and writings from Authors such as Bart E. Ehrman have helped push us in this direction. If you read about the Cathars, Waldensians, Bogomils, Arians and other "heretical" Christian sects, you can begin to see that the original teachings of Jesus have survived in various groups and with various alterations throughout and despite the existence of the Roman Catholic Church.
This book, "Christ Enlightened", is based on facts and it puts all of the information together in a comprehensive analysis. It is very informative. I think the author might be off on the idea that Jesus was teaching self-consciousness, I feel that Jesus was instead focused on good-consciousness. But I have to study more to know for sure.
Looking For God: A Seeker's Guide to Religious and Spiritual Groups of the World
Steven is able to present a lot of information in an organized way without overwhelming the reader (the apocrypha, Essenes, Gnosticism) providing plenty of juicy sub-topics that one can investigate further if they choose. Myths and dogmas built around Jesus from pagan culture are confronted and wiped away to reveal the genuine luster of Christ's message.
