I have to say it is the best book on meditation I have ever read. I used to be Catholic, and I have read books by Fr. Keating, and John Main, and Basil Pennington. I have read about, studied and tried both Centering Prayer, Christian Meditation, and many forms of Eastern meditation, in my 42 years of practice and study. I am practicing what is taught in this book now. It is the most comprehensive, complete, effective program of meditation, of it's kind, I have ever seen in one book!!

Even though this is a very long book, I have only good things to say about it. It is clear, well-written, and incorporates a vast encyclopedic knowledge of meditation and the spiritual path itself. Even after practicing Centering Prayer for years, I could never quite explain what I felt was lacking. However, Don Giacobbe's careful description of yoga and body awareness has helped me to incorporate what was missing. For that, I owe him a great debt. I had never really understood the how and why of yoga or the significance of its contribution to prayer itself. I also appreciate the delineation of the contemplative paths of darkness and light and his use of a number of Christian and classical authors and saints--as well as modern-day contemplative leaders--to illustrate his points. In addition, some physical and emotional blocks on the spiritual path are both deep-seated and unrecognized, and this book is quite helpful in its exploration of what to do about them and how to approach them without fear. Finally, I appreciate the description of how the thought system of the Course undergirds the path of meditation. The book's emphasis on the unity, the Oneness of Absolute Love, surely reflects the unity present in the mind of the author himself.
