This book also has a lot of dark ambiance with not just one evil doer foe, but two. The evil doers are, thankfully, not cartoon-like characters. Each has some depth. Their motivations for trying to succeed as evil lords are well fleshed out.
If you have not read the previous books in the series, I would not recommend this book as there are too many appearances from past book characters such as Raphael, Vincent, Cynthia and others. If you did not know those characters' histories, this installment in the series might seem confusing.
Their is just the right amount of suspense and romance. Some reviewers thought the heroine was "whiny," but, I thought she laced some of her complaints with "tongue in cheek" humor instead.
This one starts with Lord Christian Duvall declining the invitation by his sire, Lady Mathilda, to assist in taking out Lord Raphael.
Christian knows her plans is garbage and she and those assisting her will die if they attempt it. He does try to talk her out of it and makes it clear he will not be assisting her in her madness.
Of course Christian is right and Mathilda and all those with her die when Raphael, a very powerful Raphael, escapes with the help of his mate, Cyn and his children and using his vast power kills them all.
Right now Lord Christian and his only child, his Lt., Marc Forrest, are in Malibu on the way to a meeting with Rapheal. A meeting Christian has set up so he can let Rapheal know that he will be challenging for the South Territory. He's not sure how Rapheal will take this because Christian is a child of Mathilda. He's hoping for no objection by Raphael but won't know till he has this meeting.
He's also meeting with Lord Anthony who's the current Lord of the South. Anthony is stepping down so he can go home to New Orleans. At least that's what he's telling all.
On calling Lord Anthony he speaks with a woman. Natalie Gaudet. Natalie is a forensic computer expert and she's there to sift through Jabril's books to see how much he stole, where it went and see what's left.
Natalie sounds wonderful to Christian and when he meets her it will be an adventure to remember.
So begins another great read by Reynolds.
This one has Christian, Marc, Natalie, Rapheal, Cyn, Scoville, Alon, Jacklyn, Cibor, attacks by those wanting the Lordship of the South, an Anthony who has his own agenda, a Natalie and Christian who grow close, death, destruction, turned Vampires who are more like Zombies, a Marc and Christian saving Scoville, a Lord Vincent who's sent on a wild goose chase, Lord Hubert, a missing Lady Sophie and Colin, Christians vast power, and Christian and Natalie doing their best to figure it all out and stay alive.
