And while it is aimed specifically at Christian writers, the author’s experience with and knowledge of the writing business can be applied by any writer.
The topics covered include finding the genre you’re best suited for; listening for your voice; doing research; editing and revision; preparing to be published; the freelance business; query letters; preparing manuscripts; how to propose a book; keeping track of your submissions; establishing an internet presence; and even how to formulate your writer’s bio. She also includes a raft of helpful writing terms to help navigate the writing and publishing business.
This is a guide written by an experienced professional. It’s straightforward and to the point; Sayler doesn’t waste words.
She’s the author of several books, including “Living in the Nature Poem” and “Outside Eden: Poems;” “Christian Poet’s Guide to Writing Poetry;” “First Days of Parenting;: “First Days of Retirement;” among several others. She blogs at In a Christian Writer’s Life and Poetry Editor and Poetry. And she does something that very few writers do: she gives back encouragement and help to other writers.
“Christian Writer’s Guide” is a compact collection of what a writer needs to know and do in pursuing a successful career.
This is the most comprehenisve book on being a Christian Writer that I have ever read. It tells the ins and outs of traditional publishing, which the author has learned over many years and through the publishing of many books. Mary Harwell Sayler is proficient in understanding the Bible and what it can do for us in our lives and in our writings. She tells how to use a computer for organizing materials so they can be found again when needed. The last twenty-five percent of the book contains a priceless glossary that writers can use to become familiar with essential words for any writer who wishes to be published. I highly recommend this book. It is a short, easy read, but full of encyclopedic knowlege and guidance.
In a conversation-like style, Sayler will hit on both major and smaller concerns while encouraging you to expand your borders in writing. Some of the information contained includes the following:
- How you proceed in finding your "voice" in what you write.
-A checklist to evaluate your manuscript
-Characteristics and when to use query letters or cover letters
-An organizational way to develop your Bio for editors
-How to gain exposure through internet venues
Many areas she has covered have been private concerns of my heart that I never believed would get answered. The tips on revising and editing come from her wealth of experiences in which she too offers services to authors for a comparatively low fee. At the end of the book the glossary will list important terms writers will encounter and need to be aware of.
Whether you plan to write fiction or non-fiction, allow these insights to enlighten your path to fulfilling God's purpose for your life. She too has an excellent site on Facebook where writers and authors may want to explore.
