Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Includes Foreword by Kurt Warner, Super Bowl and NFL MVP

"Christianity For Dummies" is a friendly, approachable guide that introduces readers to the Christian faith and Church, putting into everyday language what exactly it means to be a "Christian".

The book is for anyone who is curious about Christianity -- both people who are not Christians and those on the periphery of the Church. However, it is also for Christians who are interested in discovering more about their faith.

To borrow the words of C.S. Lewis, "Christianity For Dummies" focuses the majority of its coverage on "mere Christianity", the core essentials of the Christian faith that all believers, regardless of their background, agree to. At the same time, areas of difference won’t be swept under the table. When debatable topics arise, the book will highlight the differences that exist among various parts of the Church and faithfully represent these positions.

Christians believe that God created all things, including a sense of humor. "Christianity For Dummies" embraces that view as it tackles a traditionally serious topic with the familiar Dummies style of wit and irreverent humor. As it does so, the book strikes an appropriate balance between funniness and a keen sensitivity and respect for the subject matter, such that even the most pious saint can chuckle without finding offense.

When I saw this book in the movie: Christian Mingle, I thought it was a fake book that was part of the comedy. But looky here, it is real. It is a book that teaches the basics of the Christian faith in an easy to understand way. A quick look at the index told me this book was going to cover just about everything you could wish to know about the origins and beliefs of Christianity. It also gives some brief comparisons of the major world religions.

Richard Wagner wrote this book in order for Christians to go deeper into their faith and to introduce the curious to Christianity in a really fun way. This book made me laugh out loud at least five times and I thought the cartoons by Rich Tennant were really cute. Richard Wagner also knows how to address some thorny issues with class. There are also explanations of buzz words like "born again."

This book briefly covers the ideas of Protestants, Catholics and Orthodox believers and explains a little of their history. You will learn how certain denominations came to be and how some of the ideas of each denomination differ. In this way you can pick which church you'd like to belong to. I found that I grew up in Protestant churches but I had some Catholic friends who were very dedicated and made me realize how important religion is to people.

I felt this book presented ideas in a very thoughtful manner. There is an entire chapter on Jesus' life and ministry which is very interesting. I also enjoyed reading about the ten Christian holy days and learned about Maundy Thursday which I'd never heard of before. There is a brief chapter on Christian leaders you should know about.

Some of the other things this book discusses includes science, evolution, postmodern ideas, New Testament teachings, relativism, the Trinity, worship (how churches each have their own unique ways of worship), sin, temptation, modern Christianity, salvation, the resurrection, sacraments, heaven, hell, traditions, why bad things happen and so much more...

I can highly recommend this book to anyone curious about Christianity. This will give you a good foundation in religious belief and it will teach you important things that could determine your eternity.

Just what I needed. Straightforward, really quite simple for such a complicated (and perhaps to some thorny) subject. I thought it was thorough and answered most of my questions. I was particularly interested in the origins of the bible (who, how, when, why and why these books and not those) and got what I needed as background. I appreciated the author including suggestions for further reading. This is my first "Dummies" book, so I don't know if the author's attempts at humor are par for the Dummies books or just par for this author. Luckily they were few and not as groaningly cute as they might have been. Easy to get through.

Great book. I don't consider myself a Dummy but it explains several basic concepts in a very easy and understanding way. Actually I bought the wrong book, I was looking for Catholicism for Dummies but it turned out to be a great reading.

I really appreciate this book. For those who are seeking to just know a little about Christianity to those who have believed for a long time, this is a great resource. I am a youth director and I have been using it to help teach a confirmation class because it is so easy to understand and straight forward. You get your questions answered without being bogged down with too much theological mumbo-jumbo. (not that that's bad, it's just not always necessary) The author fantastically presents the foundations of the Christian faith from a very objective standpoint. He reviews differences in denomination beliefs without seeming too biased one way or the other. I recommend that all Christians have a copy of this book on their bookshelves.

Would likely be 5 Stars if purchased in 'paper' format rather than Kindle. The Dummies books have lots of formatting which just don't translate well on a B/W Kindle device. The content is great, and enjoyed the narrative tremendously.

I found this book to be written very well. It is direct and to the point and; with any For Dummies books, it explains things in an easy to understand format. It is a great source to get a basic understanding of what the basics of Christianity are as well as the differences between the different denominations. It discusses a brief history and development of Christianity. I feel that this book is an excellent edition to my personal library and would recommend it to anyone that would like to have a basic understanding of what Christianity is and how it developed.

gave to kid going to Christian school for first time, he hasn't used it but I have found it very informative.
easy read and makes sense, not of the religion, but to why people believe what they believe, excellent point of reference when dealing with people of strong Christian faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 4, 2023
I can’t put this book down. As a newish Christian and someone with a curious mind I wanted something simple that explained all those details, what is the Bible anyway ? What does it mean to be a Christian ? What does faith mean? What does grace mean? What does salvation mean? And all those words that we don’t know. This book has come at a perfect time in my life as a new believer but I have the basic understanding. This is not to taken away from reading the Bible itself but rather alongside to help your understanding.

Also want to add if you want to read about Catholicism you should buy that book, this book is about Christianity. No point in getting all uppity about anti-catholic if you didn’t buy that book. Always someone looking to complain.

I would highly recommend this warm and straight to the point book for all those curiosities and explanations. Written by someone who has quite obviously been on a Christian path for quite some time 🙏🏻

Thank you to the author

Well written, very balanced in doctrine. Easy to read and understand. I have given copies to several people already (especially youth leaders) to help them get a handle on such an immense subject. The feedback from them has been very positive as well. I would personally recommend giving this book as well as an easy to read version of the Bible to someone who is seeking to understand more about Christianity or who is new to the Faith.
