A plodding Edwardian soap opera
on February 27, 2016
What if the Bronte sisters were staff writers for a soap opera like 'The Young and the Restless'? The result would probably look a lot like Downton Abbey. The plot is glacially slow moving and most of the characters are painfully predictable and two-dimensional. The notable exception to this rule is family matriarch, played by Maggie Smith. It's a shame the writers didn't give some of the other characters as many 'zinger' lines. The one thing the series makes abundantly clear is that F. Scott Fitzgerald was absolutely right when he said the rich aren't like you and me.
