In the history of English literature, Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, which has been continuously in print since it was first published in the winter of 1843, stands out as the quintessential Christmas story. What makes this charming edition of Dickens's immortal tale so special is the collection of 80 vivid illustrations by Everett Shinn (1876-1953). Shinn, a well-known artist in his time, was a popular illustrator of newspapers and magazines whose work displayed a remarkable affinity for the stories of Charles Dickens, evoking the bustling street life of the mid-1800s. Printed on heavy, cream-colored paper stock, the edges of the pages have been left rough, simulating the way in which the story might have appeared in Dickens's own time. Though countless editions of this classic have been published over the years, this one stands out as particularly beautiful, nostalgic, and evocative of the spirit of Christmas. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Dickens's classic holiday tale, like many cultural touchstones, often falls into the trap of perennial reinterpretation. First aired in 1990 but only now available on CD, NPR's presentation serves to place the familiar story back in its historical context. NPR News anchor Susan Stamberg's introduction, along with background information in the liner notes, offers valuable insights regarding both Dickens's gritty backdrop and his role in reviving Christmas traditions otherwise forgotten amid rapid urban industrialization. The script being performed is the same one Dickens used to use at readings. Comedy legend Winters, who serves as narrator while also performing all of the male roles, juggles his duties seamlessly and demonstrates remarkable dramatic range. His portrayal of Scrooge before the ghostly visitations evokes discernable pain and loss beyond the over-the-top antics of an ogre figure. Veteran actress Mimi Kennedy voices the female parts with gusto. With its quality production, attractive price and one-hour length, this release offers the perfect gift and establishes a festive new annual ritual for families to share. (Sept.)

This edition is very cheaply made. The cover looks nice online, but in person it screams cheap. The cover is just high gloss cardboard.
The pages are printed on cheap paper. The illustrations are small and indistinct. I was planning to give this as a gift but it was just too tacky. I ended up purchasing the Barnes and Noble faux leather bound version (also sold by Amazon - and for a lot less money). The B&N edition is beautiful. The cover is embossed with gold and silver, the edges of the pages are gilded. No illustrations are included, but that doesn't detract from the story. The B&N edition will make a fine gift.
If you’re not familiar with the story, then you will definitely love reading it for the first time. It follows a crochety old man who, despite having several opportunities in his life, turns away any sort of love and happiness. His love is for money and as Christmas approaches, he receives divine intervention in the form of 3 ghosts. These three ghosts will soon guide him to the right path of opening his heart and sharing it with those around him. Each ghost comes separately to reveal something of his past, present and future.
The visuals can be a bit scary and the language may be harder to follow for young readers. The themes are definitely kid friendly and I believe there’s even been a family movie made of “A Christmas Carol” years ago that might be fun to check out.
The more I read this the more I realize that it's been parodied and the themes have been borrowed in several of today's new movies and books. The self reflection that comes after reading this book will help you enjoy the holidays and appreciate the often overlooked things in life.
As for the book itself, because this is a classic, one can give stars based on the writing or based on the quality of the physical product, or both. It is Dickens, so yes, of course, 5 stars. Better yet, when almost everyone knows the story only by the various movie versions, its nice to be able to say that yes, the general rule holds true, that the book is better.
As for the physical product, I was very impressed by the quality of it. I can understand one reviewer's disappointment, in that the cover image quality is so exceptional that it really makes you think you are getting a leather-bound edition. Actually, sitting here looking at it on my desk, the illusion persists that it is leather. One has to pick it up to discover it isn't. Still, I wasn't expecting it to actually be leather, so I don't see any reason to knock it. After all, that's not in the product description anywhere, is it? Is the cover designer a victim of his own success?
I believe the official description for this kind of hard cover book is 'case laminate.' Perhaps the publisher can be enticed to create a leather bound edition that is attractive as this one is. In the meantime, this is going to make a perfect gift for a special Dickens' lover I know!
