Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.
I'd give it more than 5 stars, because it focuses on the details of each scene of the novel. George C. Scott did a great job as Ebenezer Scrooge, despite his British accent attempt.
This movie is fantastic. The story is great, the acting, top flight. Shows that it is never too late to change for the better. My family and I watch this every year on Christmas Eve and we eat nachos. It's our favourite Christmas movie.
Watched this with my mother over Christmas. This was one of her favorites. I grew up watching George C Scott in Patton, many times over, with my Dad. Great actor in his time. Enjoyed this version and will add to my annual Christmas watch list. Honestly though, my favorite is still the animated version, “A Christmas Carol” with Jim Carrey.
This is one of my favorite Christmas movies and I look forward to watching it every year but unfortunately it wasn't on local programing this year so I had to buy it and it was just what I needed so now I don't have to wait for it. The quality was right on!
Although Alistair Sim's 1951 version is considered the benchmark for this story, I greatly prefer this version as it closely mirrors the original story written by Charles Dickens. This version originally aired in 1984 on the CBS network and became an instant classic and favourite among viewers. I recall watching this film as a young child in 1984 but it wasn't until 2007 (when AMC network secured the rights to air it since it's 1984 CBS debut) that I began to appreciate this film. This has become one of my favourite Christmas films to watch during the holiday season.
This film tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge who on Christmas Eve, is visited by three Christmas spirits who shows him the error of his ways in hopes of making him a better man. George C. Scott does an excellent job portraying the grumpy miser Ebenezer Scrooge and his thrifty and cold-hearted derision is quite convincing in many scenes. The film is also backed by a talented supporting cast which includes Edward Woodward, Roger Rees, David Warner, Susannah York, Joanne Whalley and Angela Pleasance. It should be noted that this film is directed by Clive Donner who was the editor of the 1951 Alistair Sim version.
There are no DVD extras and film is presented in full-screen format (1.33:1 aspect ratio). Film includes English and Spanish subtitles and audio is presented in English Dolby Surround. Runtime is 100 minutes.
Although this film has been airing regularly every Christmas season these past few years on AMC, this is one Christmas classic that I don't mind having on DVD to watch anytime I like. For a made-for-TV movie made in 1984 (Note: In 1984, this film was released theatrically in Britain but aired on network television in North America) the sound and picture quality on this DVD transfer is very clean and crisp. I often forget that this movie originally aired on CBS.
Overall, this is a fantastic movie that's now being offered at a fantastic price. I originally purchased this directly from Amazon for $4.99 while the Blu-Ray is usually priced around $15.
