Based on the reviews I read on multiple websites I thought that Alex and Sam would resist and not cheat on their spouses. For that reason plus the fact that the book is a Kindle Unlimited I was willing to read it. I made a mistake in reading this story because they did go through it. It is like the author wanted to ram home the fact that cheating is bad because when they did it, it was lackluster and brief. It lasted about 5 seconds and Alex did not get off and as soon as Sam filled the condom he felt sick to his stomach. It seems fair because that is how I felt while reading this book.
This was a not a feel good uplifting Christmas tale like I thought it would be from reviewing the reviews. Rather it was about two selfish people who cheated because they wanted to scratch an itch. It did not matter that Sam's wife was pregnant. It did not matter that Alex's husband was Sam's friend. It did not matter that Alex liked and admired Sam's wife. It did not matter that both of their spouses were faithful and did not deserve what was done to them They did it and because it was not good and made them feel guilty they both had buyers remorse.
I don't know who I disliked more Alex who was upset that Sam wore a condom when they had smex because she wanted a baby and did not care that he was with someone else's husband or Sam who ignored his wife's phone calls and was mad when those calls interrupted his time screwing Alex.
Neither tried really hard to talk to their spouses about feeling ignored. Neither suggested counseling or anything else to improve their marriage before having smex. They had known each other a very short period of time before giving into their urges days as opposed to months. There was zero sexual chemistry between them and certainly no romance. Sam basically called Alex a big girl before they did it and Alex was slightly turned off at the sight of Sam's member. In fact all of the smex scenes including those with their spouses were telling and not showing and not sexy in the least.
I did not like the ending either. Neither told their spouse what they did and basically got a away with it. It would not surprise me if one or both of them cheating their spouse again, just this time with a person each had chemistry with. A HEA for me would have been for their spouses to leave them and be with someone worthy of that love instead of the two selfish people they were married to.
What happens when folks who are unhappy in their current relationship or marriage meet someone they find exciting and adventurous?
There is an old saying that the grass is “always greener on the other side of the fence.”
But what I’ve found in my life, and in the experiences of many I know, this adage, in reality should be “the grass is always greener over the septic tank.”
This rings true for Alexandra and Sam. Despite their obvious flaws (or perhaps because of them) I found these characters to be compelling and the plot very believable and the pacing was great (kept me turning pages).
Ms. St. James’s voice and style make for quick, easy and interesting reading.
