James Herriot's works are all wonderful to read and the illustrations draw the reader into his books. This particular story I have read to my granddaughter every year since she was very little. Every year brings tears to my eyes.
She is now 10 and asked this year if I would get her a copy of The Christmas Day Kitten for herself. She brought it Christmas Day and read it to my younger granddaughter. We all sat teary eyed at the end of the story... and so a tradition has begun.
This is the story of a stray cat who finds her way into a loving home. Very independent, "Debbie", the cat comes and goes in a home that has two dogs, - all three love to cuddle together by the fireplace. What happens with Debbie and how the story gets its name, is so touching. I can get teary just thinking about the story! Must read for children who love animals.

I have loved this book since I was a child. James Herriot tells wonderful stories and the illustrations in this book are excellent. We read this book every year on Christmas Eve, even though we're all adults. It still makes my mother cry, but the book does have a happy ending.
