About the Author

Indie author Ruthanne Reid writes about elves, aliens, vampires, and space-travel with equal abandon.

She has a degree in piano performance she never uses, a second (slightly better used) degree in Biblical Science, and currently lives in Phoenix, where the nights are glorious for the imagination. The author of the series Among the Mythos, she churns out free short stories every couple of months.

Something of a mad book-gifting fairy, Ruthanne believes good stories should be shared. Subscribe to her free email newsletter for free books and more at amongthemythos.com.

This is essentially a copy/paste of my Goodreads review. I had read the book early from a prerelease copy the author gave via her newsletter.

This story takes place in the same universe as Ruthanne's previous book, The Sundered. However it is very different, happening many years beforehand, instead of complete chaos the world is, normal. Save for mythical creatures, brutish orcs, nightmarish beasts, magical elves, and people who seem normal yet have the ability to use magic. Perhaps the world isn't so 'normal' after all.

Minor plot line points below in the event you want to be fully surprised:

*****
[Katie is one of these people, normal in every possible way, with a pinch of magic. She arrives home finding a box filled with a baby dragon, and because she wishes for a normal existence is thrown into an adventure bigger than herself. Running into and running away with Grey, main character of Ruthanne's WIP serial novel Strings, Katie travels around the world and finds from her travels that the baby she now must protect will in the future end a war.]
*****

The book ends on a cliffhanger, but like all good stories, when it ends on a cliffhanger, you are asking for more as soon as you finish, and this is no exception.

I think I'm pretty stingy with my five-star ratings, but this was such a fantastic little story. Funny, charming, imaginative, and - my only complaint - all too short! I want to spend an entire novel with these characters! This was just an all around great read.

In a world filled with all types of beings, Katie just wants to live a normal life. One without magic.

She’s doing just that until someone leaves a box on her doorstep. The box looks so innocent until it jumps. And jumps some more. To keep her neighbors from seeing it, she scoops it up and takes it inside.

Opening the box, she is instantly enchanted by the tiny irridescent dragon. It’s all cute and cuddly until it vomits fire and about burns her kitchen down.

Her attempt at a normal life might not have appeared to be a great success but she was happy. Now Katie’s being dragged back into the dragon war. She has something the Hunters want and an ancient relative may be the only one to save her.

Poor Katie. She’s a descendant of the great wizard, Merlin, so how could she expect to ever live a normal life. Can’t blame her for trying though.

Grey is an elf, but don’t let him hear you say that. He despises that tag and insists on being referred to as a Fae. He’s a preener, young, arrogant, and a bit reckless. I wondered if he and Katie might get together. Didn’t really see it in this short story but who knows.

My fav is Versavious. A perfect name for the little darling. A pearl white baby dragon who threw up on Katie and nearly set her shoes and house on fire. He’s so precious and Katie had her hands full sneaking him to Merlin’s island.

Never dull, no fluff. Just fun and danger on every page. I’m moving on to read Strings, the next short story, now.

I received this book for my honest review.

I don't much like short stories because they leave you frustrated for more. As this one did. But the characters were so wonderful, it's a great hook into reading more of her work (I didn't read the first one). I do hope the author writes more in this line.

This novelette is an accompaniment to Ruthanne Reid's 'Among the Mythos' collection. After reading her debut book The Sundered (and subsequently promising to read anything by her), I downloaded this short.

This little gem introduces you to Katie Lin, as in Merlin, his great, great, great, great (you get the point) granddaughter, but he prefers her to call him uncle. Why yes, he is still alive! Growing up a Lin, Katie's had enough of the magical world. When she made her choice to leave the family, she meant it. In her own words 'Generational war has it's casualties, and not all family loss is due to death.' So you can only imagine her enthusiasm when she comes home to find a box at her door that was jumping. Better yet, nothing spells happiness to a person trying to avoid magic like a baby dragon.

At only 80 pages, this novelette was better than some whole books I've read in the past. It's a bit of a teaser, so be prepared that it's open ended. While short, the character development still packs a punch. Katie is a superbly written character, with an entertaining, sarcastic and snarky personality. An example of this:

'He looked at me warmly, leaned into my touch, and then puked fire all over my boots.[ ] "Okay, Katie,” I told myself as I rubbed his soft underbelly. “You’ve always wanted a dragon. Look how cute he is, just hatched and already barfing fire!"'

Speaking of entertaining, while the book itself was of course entertaining, so was most of the dialogue and a few of the words. One of my favorite phrases/words:

"You're mad. Completely, utterly, batshitterly mad."

Batshitterly lol. I may just have to use that word.
