A copy of this classical Christmas music set has been in my family for decades (we put them on CD's about 10 years ago and now of course, the whole set is loaded into itunes) It sounds like it was recorded by a full orchestra and a large chior. The musicianship here both superb and tasteful. No celebrity crooners or blaring instrument solos here, this is relaxing, sentimental classical Chrismas music from a bygone age that sets the perfect mood and doesn't get in the way while you're eating turkey or opening presents. Some of the songs recorded here you probably will not know - I guess some of those old-school Christmas songs lost popularity over the last few decades, but regardless, the whole collection is really enjoyable.

For a complete Christmas set, also get The Sweet Voices of Christmas (also by the Longines Symphonette) which is just one disc and has the few songs that this collection doesn't. Between the two sets, you've got about every Christmas song ever written.

Before we transferred this to CD, we tried to find other classical and choral sets to effectively replace this since our records weren't in great shape, but there's no substitute for this. They really don't make Christmas music like they used to.

Of course I can't speak to the condition of any of the used sets for sale here so buy from a reputable vendor. I'd love to try cleaning up my version with software but haven't gotten around to that yet. It's really time for someone to acquire the copyrights to this and put out a quality cd set.

The above review sums up my sentiment *perfectly*: I might as well have written it myself.
This collection was the soundtrack of my 1970s childhood Christmases. The are thousands of Christmas albums out there, and dozens of new ones come out each year. Not one of them can hold a candle to this collection.
My family's copy has been mising for several years - this is what happens when your parents move several times before retiring. So, I've just bought it on eBay for this (2012) Christmas. I can hardly wait to hear it again. Will also probably transfer it to CDs if the copy is in good shape.
Merry Christmas, everyone.

We listened to this and pretty much only this Christmas album my entire childhood. Ever since moving out of my parents' house, I have spend every Christmas searching for a suitable replacement and nothing can even come close. To me, there is no Christmas without this music. Nothing else can ever come close. Pretty sure between the 4 LPs, they contain every classic Christmas song ever written. None of that newfangled, crappy modern garbage. SO happy to have found this again! Will be transferring it to CD and then iTunes immediately.

My parents had this album when I was growing up and I loved listening to it each Christmas. My sister and I would lie down by the lighted tree in the dark and play this album and dream about what Santa would bring. If you are a fan of choruses then you will enjoy this album. After my parents passed away I was not able to find this among their things. I searched for many years before finding a copy. I bought the album and had it transferred to CDs since I don't have a record player anymore. This brings back wonderful memories each time I listen to it. It's a good mix of classic songs like "I'll Be Home for Christmas" with some orchestra instrumentals, and some religious songs. I highly recommend it.

My father bought this 4-album set in 1966 and it is the soundtrack for Christmas for my entire family. I found a CD transfer a couple of years back and got copies for my 5 sisters. Our parents are no longer with us and having this music available to us brings them a little closer to us.

The Longines Symphonette recordings ususally did not have any recording credits. I did some research and found out that Christmas at the Fireside is the work of arranger Robert Farnon. His work is terrific here, whether using strings, choirs, or jazz combos. His British heritage really shows in the inclusion of songs like 'The Boar's Head Carol' and 'Masters In This Hall', which gives Christmas At the Fireside a different flavor than most holiday music collections.

Farnon also did the arrangements and conducting on the Tony Bennett Christmas album, 'Snowfall', also one of my favorites.

I can't recommend this collection highly enough. A beautiful, tasteful collection of great music.
