I have read the first two Harry Potter books with my 6 and 4 year old, and we decided to take a little break from HP and read the Christmas Pig since it just came out and it was the Holiday Season. I will say, the first few chapters were a little intense for my 6 and 4 year old, and I did, throughout the story, make a few minor adjustments to word selection to make it a tad more appropriate for the vocabulary I want my children using. However, once we got passed those first few chapters, the story blossomed in to a journey through our emotions. My four year old was brought to tears in a few parts of the story both from sadness and happiness. They both had questions and theories about what was going to happen. They were engaged the entire book and always wanted me to keep reading.
I can understand and see some of the points others have made in low review scores, but I'm so glad I read on after the first few chapters. I would rather those topics come up while my wife and I are reading a story to them so they can ask questions in a safe environment rather than learn it elsewhere. Each of those "bad" moments in the story can be turned in to a great learning moment where you can explain to them why someone did what they did and how they could have possibly responded differently. I would suggest to keep reading if your on these sites trying to decide what to do. However, you know your kids best and what they can and can't handle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of The Christmas Pig, by J. K. Rowling (Illus. Jim Field)
Genre: Fantasy/Christmas/Childrens
Review: This book, quite literally, tore me apart. I couldn't put it down so I ended up binge reading the entire thing when I should have been sleeping. No regrets, absolutely none. The story does get quite heavy at times, as the main character deals with his parents' divorce, bullying, and loss, but it feels so real and you just know that Jack has to pull through and succeed because your heart is relying on that being the case. There are definitely darker moments that may frighten some children, but that's pretty true of any great children's book. You can only coddle your kids to a certain point - reality rises up to face everyone some day.
The Land of the Lost was a great new introduction by J. K. Rowling. I like the idea of lost things and feelings going somewhere, either to be found again or forever cherished in memory. The reality that some things may never be found or remembered was personified in The Loser, who consumes the forgotten things that weren't cared for by their owners, making them disappear entirely from the land of the living. The idea of animism has always been special to me, and I definitely see a level of that in this book.
The book does have a HEA, but it's not the one you initially root for going into the adventure. It was, however, executed really well. I cried, reflected on how unfair life can be at times, and then came to terms with how things had to be - much, I expect, the way Jack did. Yes, I did just compare myself to a 7 year-old boy. I was happy with the conclusion of the book.
Oh, and I definitely recommend it.
“I may not shine as brightly as my friend Happiness, but my flame is harder to extinguish.” - Hope
(An aside here, for anyone who may have read this book/will read this book and also loves the idea of forgotten things living on - Forgotton Anne on Steam also deals with lost items in the Forgotten Lands, and is one of my favourite games).
