The Christmas Promise by Alison Mitchell and illustrated by Catalina Echeverii is a bit unique in that its main focus is on sharing that message of Jesus as King. I appreciated at the start of this book, the author and illustrator endeavored to drive home that Jesus was no ordinary king. The various drawings on the first two pages of the book depict what various earthly kings throughout history have looked like, noting “God promised a new King. He wasn’t any ordinary King, like the ones we see on tv or in books. He would be different. He would be a New King; a Rescuing King; a Forever King!” Captured in those simple sentences is the heart of the gospel message.
Beginning with the angel Gabriel’s declaration to Mary of God’s plan to use her to bring Jesus into the world, The Christmas Promise traces the biblical account of Jesus’ birth. Throughout, the author continues to emphasize the message of Jesus being King, using repetition as a key means to remind the child who will be reading this book or having it read to them of this wonderful fact.
The illustrations are wonderfully drawn and depict in a manner a child and even adults will appreciate the glorious birth of Jesus. Furthermore, the author uses selective word choices to bring to bear that Jesus was not just an ordinary king – He was a special King. At the conclusion of the book, the author shares that the name of this special King is Jesus and in one concluding page depicts through excellent illustrations Jesus as a newborn child, being a carpenter, teaching the masses, dying on the cross, and as the risen and conquering King. They also share the Scripture passages where the birth of Jesus can be found as well as the passages in the Old Testament containing the promise that Jesus the Savior would come to redeem us.
I highly recommend this book for parents and for churches to purchase to place in their Sunday School classrooms. This is an excellent book to read not just during the Christmas season, but all throughout the year as it’s wonderfully illustrated and biblically sound message is one to be treasured at all times.
