So, what was the matter with the book? I really wanted to like it--Scotland, Christmas, how could it get better? But I simply could not get past the very self-conscious writing and the utterly predictable plot. Every plot twist was telegraphed way in advance, leaving me extremely frustrated that it took the characters so long to figure out what had happened, to whom, and when. Plot spoiler: when a past protagonist has an affair and then disappears for several months, returning with a baby adopted abroad, how many IQ points should it take to figure out what really happened?
The heroine was a mix of Superwoman and stupidity, spouting pop psychology in a way that I find utterly ridiculous. Surely that sort of touchy-feely nonsense went the well-deserved way of extinction in the 1960s. It's a miracle that the heroine had any success with it, let alone the huge success she seems to have accomplished. I know what I would say if someone tried out that garbage on me, particularly someone so out of tune with her own emotions.
I like chick lit, but it has to be well written, well plotted, and well researched. This book meets none of these criteria. I did enjoy the information about Scotch, but that's about as far as it went.
Alex Hyde - a business coach is hired to "straighten out" CEO of Kentallen Distilleries, Lochlan Farqhuar. Both characters are determined and focused on their goals. That would be a huge benefit if their goals were not different. And lies that Alex was told from the beginning about Lochie didn't help her built a successful partnership with him. An accidental fire at the distillery doesn't help Alex's progress either. However after Alex mistakenly hijacks Lochie's weekend with his close friends, she learns the reasons behind stubborn CEO's behavior. During this weekend dangerous sparks are flying between our two headstrong characters.
Time is running out, Christmas is around the corner and Alex must wrap up the deal she was hired to do. Sholto Farqhuar drives Lochlan out of family business using evidence Alex has found in family archives. Lochlan is devastated by her betrayal. The deal is done, she is financially rewarded, however, she is not at peace, Alex is angry that she was tricked by Farqhuar family. All she wants is to fix what she had broke, and when Alex Hyde sets the goal - she achieves it... well and gets her happy ending in the process.
It was an absolute delight to get lost in the pages of this marvelous novel. Karen Swan did it again!
I have been to Scotland and found it to be very magical. It looks an awful lot like the Willamette Valley in Oregon, USA. The pine trees in the highlands are in Central Oregon. The wheat fields in the lowlands are found in Oregon as well. Lots of grass seed grows in the Willamette Valley.
I have always loved the sound of bagpipes, beautiful!
Set on the Isle of Islay in Scotland. Alex Hyde, business consultant finds herself a long way from her smart London life, trying to sort out, Lochlan, the wayward CEO of Kentallen Distilleries. Nothing is as it seems and you will be drawn into their story and won't want to put this book down.
A fascinating story to curl up with this Christmas.
