Ultimately, the classic feel of these songs and the way they are sung will remind you of very traditional Christmases long, long past. It is very rare for new releases to have this exceptional quality of atmosphere. It brought back wonderful feelings and memories of window shopping as a kid, the Christmas music they played on speakers at night in my little town, Christmas plays at school, and the music we had in our own home growing up (even though it was late 60's - 70's, we had old stuff). I think even very young generations can create their own memories with this classic collection, though not everyone will appreciate the theatrical style in places. The mix is eclectic enough to not grow tiresome. I highly recommend it!
BUT the best track is Jim Carter performing Twas the Night Before Christmas. His booming voice brings the classic poem to life. This alone is worth the price of the album!
This would make an excellent gift for any fan of Downton Abbey.
Christmas at Downton Abbey is an intelligent blend of traditional carols and classical Christmas music. Because it is indeed a Christmas album, it is not ashamed to celebrate the birth of the Christ child, respectfully portrayed with the largeness of a bygone era. And because it is also a Downton Abbey album, we are treated to just a little bit (two tracks) of Downton theme music--a nice touch that doesn't get in the way.
This is mature, and somewhat sophisticated music, yet it does not neglect the child in us who wants to once again believe in something bigger than ourselves. I fully enjoy the relaxing feel and what I, as an American, can imagine to be a delightfully old English approach to Christmas.
The performances of Elizabeth McGovern and Julian Overden did not disappoint. I appreciated McGovern's fresh interpretations without doing violence to familiar tradition, while Overden's operatic voice was clear and beautiful. And Jim Carter's "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" was a fun listen, imagining Mr Carson reading to village children with the soft side beneath his stoic, gruff exterior.
I recommend this album wholeheartedly. It brings back the imagery of warm fireplaces, soft lights, roasted chestnuts and hot mulled cider.
