Christmastime 1939 (a prequel) by Linda Mahkovec, is a heart-warming, feel good story of nostalgia, quirky characters, and a mother's love and tenacity all the while living in Brooklyn, NY with her two, very active, young sons during WWII. Add in a combative boss and the struggles with her late husband's passing while trying to make ends-meet and holding it together during a bout of the holiday dulldrums as worries become all-consuming; you now have the very thing that makes a story, a story....
Christmas is a time of rejoicing, of hopes and dreams.... of peace and the love of family, yet we all tend to let the circumstance around us during this time to overwhelm... and this rings true for our main character, the lovable Lillian Hapsey.
This story will tug at the heart strings and have you emotionally invested as it moves you though the facets of Lillians' quest of re-kindling her passion and believing in herself, once again.
I highly recommend this for anyone looking for that touching story of the Christmas Spirit. This is truly an inspiring novella that you will appreciate and be entertained by.
Thank you Linda Mahkovec for writing this truly enjoyable story.

Hitler is causing havoc in Europe and the people in Brooklyn, New York, are getting nervous. Lillian lost her husband several years back and has not yet become accustomed to being alone. She works extremely hard and is good at her job, but is not appreciated by her boss; things are very shaky at work. She is stressed, has no time, and more importantly, has no desire to deal with Christmas and just wants it out of the way. Her young sons pick up on this and do not hesitate in voicing their disappointment in their mother. Things continue to go downhill (in a bad way) for Lillian and at one point I said out loud, “God, Lillian, you are really in a hopeless mess.” The rest of the story revolves around how Lillian attempts to overcome her many challenges and pull her life together.
This is a perfect holiday novella to read on an overcast cold and windy November or December day. I came to really like the characters and the things people were doing to try to help each other out, even the small children. I also delighted in the author’s wonderful descriptions of New York City during the Christmas season.
This is an inspirational read and almost made me want to jump into the book and join Lillian on her upwards journey. Lucky for me, Christmastime 1940 is already sitting on my kindle and calling my name!
I highly recommend Christmastime 1939 for anyone looking for a quick, inspiring holiday read.
What a wonderful, delightful, entertaining treat to back-track and enter the “Christmastime” 1939 :Prequel to the Christmastime Series” by Linda Mahkovec . I enjoyed visiting Lillian Hapsey and her two young sons, who are now living in Brooklyn. The Genres for this book are Fiction, Historical Fiction, and Women’s Fiction. The timeline for this story is just before World War Two, when Hitler is in Europe. There is talk of whether there should be United States involvement.
This year Lillian is determined to somehow give her sons Tommy and Gabriel a wonderful Merry Christmas. This is the first Christmas that Lillian won’t be with her sister. Despite problems and obstacles, is it possible for the family to have a wonderful holiday? Can Lillian’s dreams come true? I was so disappointed when the story ended, since I wanted more. The author vividly describes the scenery and food. I had to remember for a minute that it wasn’t December. I would highly recommend this heart-warming, emotional story for those readers that enjoy family stories, have dreams and hopes.
