This short book is an absolute "must read" for anyone seeking to understand the "why" of the Catholic sexual abuse phenomenon that is worldwide. Geoff Robinson is in a unique position to write authoritatively about this problem. He has been a bishop since 1986, is a Canon Lawyer, a scripture scholar and has worked extensively with victims of clergy sexual abuse. This book is invaluable because it looks much deeper into the root causes of why the two headed monster has existed in the midst of the world's oldest and largest Christian denomination. One head is the sexual abuse itself ... the violation of children and adults by clerics of all ranks. The other head, which is much more insidious and difficult to fully understand, is the enabling of widespread sexual violation by Church leadership from popes on down to bishops. The attention of the media, the secular society, the victims and Catholics in general has not been primarily focused on the abuse itself. Rather, it has been on the confounding and scandalous behavior of the hierarchy who have given every appearance of both enabling cleric-perpetrators and defending them when caught. This is the cause of the real scandal. Bishop Robinson looks deeply into the Church's theological understanding of itself and into the Catholic culture for answers. His straightforward writing style reveals a profound grasp of the foundational aspects of the Church that have made the abuse problem possible. People of all walks of life and of all religions and of no religion have been stunned by the popes' and bishops' confusing response to the scandal more so than by the abuse itself. They have rightfully demanded "why." The institution is afraid to look deeply at itself but Bishop Robinson is not. He has come up with answers that may not bring comfort to some Catholics but they do move the entire problem closer to seeing the possibility of a solution.

Robinson is talking plainly about the underlying issues that have contributed to sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. In view of these issues, he is making a solid case for the urgent need for a Church Council that will address this scandal globally by ensuring no less than a high profile attendance of laity as part of this council. He has initiated a petition to Pope Francis, and appeals for the universal Church to participate in this.

This book is written in very accessible language. Bishop Robinson is proposing the objective of solving the clerical abuse crisis - which most Catholics might be enthusiastic about - and, in the process of addressing that particular matter achieve greater good and lead to some cure of the underlying systemic problems that have caused the clerical abuse crisis and the way the church has dealt with it around the world.

The book provides a the rationale for a global petition at [...] initiated by Bishop Robinson together with Bishop Pat Power and Bishop Bill Morris. It calls for a council of the whole church to be convened to deal with the one issue of Sexual abuse. As at July 1 2013 it has amassed over 80,000 signatures. Add you voice to the call to end sexual abuse in the church ... for good!

This is a very inspiring and courageous book from the so far only catholic church bishop
who seeks wiith all his heart , charity , and deep experience an end to the sexual abuse crisis
and dares propose to definitely put an end to the factors which cause those features to be endemic in the catholic
church since many centuries . I hope it will produce some good results and be fruitful .

Bravo Bishop Robinson! The author shows that he is above all a disciple of Jesus and also a faithful son of the church. I say the later because it is obvious that he cares deeply that the church be what it claims to be. He challenges the church to look within and eradicate all that is not of Jesus and has led many on a path of clericalism that has destroyed the lives of many innocent children. I am reminded of the insult hurled at President Franklin D. Roosevelt that he was "...a traitor to his class," when in reality his administration likely saved the country from an open rebellion.
My sense is that Pope Francis would not object at all to the good bishops reflection.

Again, another great book by Bishop Robinson. He is able to comprehend and understand the power structure of the church that covers up and allows this abuse to remain part of our problem as institution. His final recommendation are truly significant but in reality I doubt if the institution will ever be able to take those steps necessary to correct not simply this evil of sexual abuse but the culture of the church which also breeds this horrible situation

An excellent presentation of what is needed to reform the priesthood in the Catholic Church, to undo the past clericalism and other issues that increased the possibility of sexual abuse. nThe problem of course is the long history of errors, and the seeming intransigence of "Rome" to listen to anyone outside their own bastion of fear of change and growth.
