I bought this Chromebook with the idea of having a simple right to the point laptop / or a tablet with an attached keyboard, It is not the first time that I have a similar device, I owned a HP laptop, that was convertible it was a touch screen, flip tablet/laptop HP TX-2500 model year 2008, so the idea of a flip screen, touch screen, keyboard on screen and physical keyboard is already very old. I did some upgrades and the end it was running Win 8.1 64 bit with a Samsung SSD 250GB, and 4GB memory. (I gave it to my niece who is going to college). Why do I say all of this, so you know I have bases for comparison, I also I own a Galaxy Tab (for which I have a case with a Bluetooth keyboard), a One Plus Smartphone, and a touch screen 25” over the top Dell Desktop. (I work with graphics, accounting, word processing and light CAD)
Ok so let’s start with the C-100 Chromebook. The features of flip screen, a physical keyboard, self stand, touch screen display, touch screen keyboard, and the mouse/touchpad are awesome, and those features are comparable to with the laptop that I had before. So in that sense I did not downgrade, I kept the same features.
I installed a Samsung EVO 64GB micro SD priced in Amazon at $27, in my experience 32 GB would have been enough, but the price of the 64GB was very attractive.Read more ›
4/12 Update - 7 months since my last update, this Chromebook is a completely different computer than when I first got it. I can't even have more than 5 tabs open without the computer crawling. Seriously disappointed with how far this computer has degraded over time.
9/11 Update - After about 2 months since my last update, I've noticed serious performance degradation. And I haven't installed anything on it or added anything else. Also, tried the wireless on google fiber, and I was not getting the theoretical speeds that I should be getting. I have the supposed same wireless card on my laptop, and my wireless speeds are 700 up/down. On this device, they never go higher than 180 up/down, which is a tad bit annoying since the idea of this device is to run on a fiber connection to get most of your stuff.
7/5 Update - Still pretty shocked about the wireless card. I think I'm going to contact ASUS about it, but even when I'm 10 feet away from my wireless router I only get 3/4 bars. I don't know if other people have had wireless problems, but I certainly have. Between the battery life & the wireless, I think it's hard to justify 5 stars still and I'm dropping it down to 4.
7/2 Update About Price - Seems that Amazon is out of stock currently and a 3rd party is selling them for $309. DON'T BUY IT! Amazon will have more soon and it will save you $60! Also just realized I should probably update at the top of the post from now on, so I'll do that. A few other things, saw someone complaining about the touch screen being not easy to move your fingers around with. I disagree. My fingers slide like crazy across the screen ever so smoothly!Read more ›
The screen is superb. I rate it significantly better than my iPad Air's highly touted retina screen. The spec sheet may have the retina at a higher resolution but the contrast and saturation of the Asus crushes the Apple product making it better for any task from reading, to working, to watching videos. No contest.
Touch screen: works well. Not quite up to iPad standards in the sense of multi-finger gestures, but not badly dinged by this lack. The screen is responsive and a worthy addition to a laptop.
Keyboard: The keyboard is about the same size as the standard Mac keyboard. To me, that means it's meant for pixies but most, including my Mac using wife, find it perfect. My huge ape-like hands have an issue with it as they do with any Mac. I'd guess 90% of the population will have no issue.
Printing: Chromebooks have a bad rap here and I agree that not having WiFi printing a serious omission. However, I had a ChromeOS ready Epson already needing only a firmware upgrade. Doing this upgrade and then setting up Google Print was a snap. So if you have ready hardware - it's easy peasy. If you don't, grrrr.
Flexibility: here's where the Chromebooks shine. As you likely know, you can run Google Office off or online storing files in the Cloud or locally. I went from cloud skeptical to storing my important files there to forget about backups failing or viruses lurking.Read more ›
