Unfortunately, for a lot of the book, the pacing was slow. There was no real sense of urgency or danger until about 20% in which made it hard to keep reading with enthusiasm. If it hadn't been for the interesting concept of chronography, I would have ditched the book by then. The sluggishness was due in part to some info-dumping on scientific procedures, many of which could have been streamlined to keep the plot moving. I think the book clocked in at 274 pages, and it probably could have been trimmed at least ten percent of that without losing anything. As events got moving, the story picked up tension, and I found myself reading faster.
While reading, I felt somewhat like the main character Dani, who has a monotonous job as an intern at a large corporation. Aside from the interesting setting, I found the novel hard to get into learning about her humdrum life. The second half of the book was redeeming, and by the last quarter I was not as willing to put the book down. Overall Dani's character was good, and the protagonist characters were interesting as well. I felt the antagonist was slightly under developed and lackluster by comparison.
I'll probably continue with this series, but it's not currently at the top of my reading list.
Most of the characters are engaging. The one villain was one-dimensional, but you know what? I have read about people who are exactly that one-dimensional and I've personally met a number of psychopaths and sociopaths (and made sure they never learned my address). The flat villain might be the most realistic character in the whole book.
There were times I found myself urging the text to pick up the pace. The pace reminded me of the movies I watched with fascination as a child and now find over long and sloooow. We have been conditioned to expect an explosion or decapitation on every page. This book is far gentler than that. There is light romance that is not overly sensual.
I know that most readers will absolutely not care about this, but I was awed by how clean the text was. I could not find a singly typo, homonym error, or grammar mistake. Will most of us don't read to look at good punctuation and spelling, I find such things relaxing and an indicator of quality and care.
Will you like the book? If you like alternate universe stories, light romance, and a good portrayal of how research is carried on, you just might.
I highly recommend this book, if your just looking for something fresh and a compelling storyline with well developed characters.

Good sci-fi: 5 out of 5
My only complaint is that the ending wasn't too satisfying. It hints at a possible future but doesn't really resolve--but hey, it's a series, so that's only natural. I suppose I'll just have to pick up the next one as soon as possible!
