Editorial Reviews

Verdict: Readers whoenjoy fantasy stories and don't mind biblical comparisons will find much tolike in THE CHRONICLES OF ALTARAN (Book 1: Shadow Lord Rising), an engagingtale of good and evil featuring interesting and compelling characters in a strange, often brutal, world.

4.2 out of 5
THE CHRONICLES OF ALTARAN (Book 1: Shadow LordRising) tells the story of Ransom Cross, a young man kidnapped by assassinsfrom Gehring's Crossing, his hometown in the world of Altaran. The hired gunswant to take the blond, blue-eyed boy to their master, Shaitan, also known asthe Shadow Lord. They are intercepted by Ghorrin, giant lizard/dinosaurcreatures who make up one of the four races of Altaran. Ghorrin are intelligentbeings with the ability to speak, and they save Ransom from his attackers. An aspiringhealer, Ransom initially functions as a prisoner in the Ghorrin caves beforesaving Yc-rem, one of the younglings who suffered a broken leg. Yc-rem repaysRansom by accompanying him on his return home, a reward for his good deed. Yetthe boy finds his hometown in ashes and his parents murdered, which sets off achain of events that includes adventures with pirates and assorted fantasticalcreatures who want to do Ransom, Yc-rem, Brother Andrew (a local priest) andHunter (Ransom's assigned bodyguard) plenty of harm.
The first of a four book series which undoubtedly featuresRansom discovering why the Shadow Lord wants him and what his true destiny is,THE CHRONICLES OF ALTARAN draws clear biblical comparisons. Shaitan, themonster who speaks in the first few pages and is only briefly mentionedthroughout the rest of the book, is an obvious characterization of Satan. Likethe devil, Shaitan was among the "good" gods of Altaran, but fell from grace. His mad desire for power split the world in two: those who follow the ShadowLord and those who adhere to the teachings of Makir, an obvious interpretationof the Christian god. Makir's word is written in The Chronicles ofAltaran, or the fantasy world'sbible.

Clear biblical references aside, THE CHRONICLES OF ALTARAN is anengaging tale of good and evil, another story of the hero's journey. Much likeLuke Skywalker in Star Wars, Ransom Cross is a relatively ordinary young man thrust into alife of adventure following the demise of his parents (or in Luke's case, hisaunt and uncle). He makes numerous discoveries about the world he lives in andhimself as he attempts to find his place. And while the book features severaltypos, the characters are compelling enough to keep the reader interested.Perhaps one of the most loveable characters is Yc-rem, the youngling Ghorrinwhose earnestness, bravery, and sweet temperament more than make up for hisintimidating appearance.

About the Author

Mark Swirsky pursued biology as a career, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Texas A&M University and a Masters in Environmental Management from the University of Houston at Clear Lake. While working as a lab supervisor for an environmental consulting firm, he felt called by God into Christian ministry. He now serves as Senior Pastor in a church in Texas. An avid fan of both J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Ring series and CS Lewis’ Narnia series, Mark has sought to infuse a Christian world view into a fantasy world just as they did, making use of his background in biology to create new creatures and races. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.
