Fry’s writing, as always, is superb, with descriptions that made me feel more like I was watching the story unfold in front of me, than merely reading about it. The pace of the story couldn’t be more perfect. The characters, good and evil, are all entirely realistic.
I loved this story, and will find it difficult to wait for the next book in this series. I definitely recommend THE CHRONICLES OF AVELINE: AWAKENING to all.
When Aveline is mistreated and abused by the Church she decides to escape and follow her lover to the Holy Land to fight in the Crusades as a female Knight. This is a totally riveting tale that I absolutely could not put down. Fry draws you into his stories so personally and so intensely that you can feel the pain and anguish, physically, of his heroes.
I can't recommend this book enough and just hope and pray that the next part of Aveline's adventures in Palestine are not too far away.
Quite by chance she discovers how very skilled she is with a bow and arrow and generally in the art of war. She is lucky to have Sir Cedric to mentor her, a former Crusader and best friend of her father as well as her father’s approval and support.
It was lovely to see Aveline blossoming as she grows up. But then, just as she thinks she has found what she was looking for, things rapidly spin out of control. Remember, it is the time of the Third Crusades. Yet Aveline proves to be a really resourceful young woman and I enjoy following her adventures. There is a lot of love and sorrow and some really excruciating moments she has to go through, yet she finds the strength to push through. I felt, at times, sad and happy with her and I nearly cheered when her plan came through.
This is a wonderful story of love and war, of deep passion and ghastly betrayal and cunning plots but most of all a lovely tale that reads easily and it sweeps you off your feet from the first page.
I am really looking forward to discovering what Aveline’s future holds for her!
Awakening, is truly an appropriate subtitle for this novel.
Aveline, a young, English nobleman’s daughter, comes of age in this Ken Fry adventure. Living in the age of the third Crusade, Aveline is hardly a common young woman with dreams of becoming wife and mother to some wealthy Noble. Indeed, she has a love for adventure and danger until she meets the Earl’s son Quentin, with whom she falls deeply in love. Their love is interrupted and destroyed by an overbearing church ruled by a greedy and power-hungry Abbot who condemns Aveline to a life sentence in a convent and her lover to an unheard of thirteen-year servitude to the King and Crusades.
This is a wonderful story of love, survival and quests. Mr. Fry has created a wonderful and believable character in Aveline as well as the other characters. I found my already strong feelings toward the church, even more exaggerated as I read Fry’s accounting of the churches of the eleventh century. I found myself vocalizing my support of Aveline as she pursued her quest for her love against all odds in the trek into the Holy Land.
I would recommend the book, and look forward to the next episode.
