This book is a compelling fantasy about a dragon in transition named Nath. Nath was chosen to be the guardian, a bridge between the world of men and dragons. Nath desperately wants to earn his scales and become a full dragon but he has not fulfilled enough duties for it to happen. Frustrated with his son's attitude, his father gives him an ultimatum, either come home with your scales or don't come home.

Nath now feels the pressure more than ever to get his scales and he sets out on journey to earn them.

This books plot moves along nicely and has many battle scenes with dreadful creatures like orcs and other unpleasant things. The author gave Nath a sense of humor which I liked. I also liked Nath's struggle between the two worlds.

This is a book you will not want to put down as it immerses you into a world of dragons, elves, orcs and more. This book is great for kids too.

This story is well written, original and promising. The Hero, Nath Dragon, is appealing because I think people can relate to him. He's got responsibilities, but when he doesn't fulfill them, his father calls him out. Nath has to fulfill his destiny or never return home. I really enjoyed this story and I'll be reading more.

Nath Dragon is destined to replace his father someday but, not until he proves himself. His father banishes him and tells him not to return until he has decided if he wants to be a man or a dragon. Nath doesn't have any scales yet, though he is 200 years old. His father tells him only to return when he has earned his scales. Nath and his dwarven companion Brenwar are seeking evil, hoping to find the dealers that trade in dragon accessories. Dragon scales, teeth, skin, claws, and horns were highly prized possessions for wealthy citizens.

This is an exciting fantasy world, with ruthless characters and bloody battles. The story is a well-written, enchanting tale that swept me along with its vivid descriptions.

Love this book...Plenty of action, great dialogue, and enjoyable characters. It also has an unexpected ending. The content makes it wonderful for many age groups, with minimal blood shed description and brief mentions of painted ladies and ale.

I was only disappointed by its length, I wanted to keep reading. But the author does let us know that it is a novella and any other CoD book to come will be longer.

Can't wait for the next book in the series!

I am an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy, so I really, really wanted to like this book. Unfortunately, also being a literate adult, I was disappointed.

I think that perhaps this book is primarily geared towards the 12 year old "gamer boy" crowd. As a 10 volume series with a Kindle price adding up to over $25.00, though, it's hard to imagine that the remainder of the books in the series will get as big a response.

The story elements have some neat ideas in them, and I think the potential is in there to write a really neat book. But that's not what happened here. Instead the plot trudges predictably along without anything to give us even a pause for thought.

The use of language is just terrible. It is filled with cliches, oddly-specific lists of things (like someone combing a Dungeons & Dragons reference book for ideas), and uses of "that word that sounds right, but is just not right" - which could be a spell-check-proof typo, except for the frequency (he passed "a grassy gnoll" in his travels!).

Grammar and punctuation are similarly broken and/or simplistic, and the book is primarily constructed of short, choppy sentences, strung together without thought of transitions or other niceties.

Character development is simply non-existent, and all characters major and minor are strictly cookie-cutter stereotypes.

But you know, with all that bad to be said about it... I kept reading! It's a short book. It DOES have those story ideas that seem like they could be going somewhere interesting. At least it's not slow and plodding!

Would I shell out $2.99 for the next installment, though? And the next, and the next... No. Definitely not.

I am a sucker for fantasy from the get-go and The character of Nath Dragon is cocky and tough. He's also a dragon, who can take the shape of a man. If that hasn't piqued your interest, just wait, it gets better. Nath's life's work is to hunt dragon poachers. Along with his partner Brenwar, a dwarf with a gruff and wry sense of humor, Nath goes out of his way to find trouble before it finds him. I've read three novels by Halloran and each one surprises me more than the last. This author has the unique gift and skill of taking a classic theme and turning it on it's head, taking it in a completely new direction. This novel takes the mythical world of dragons and magical folk and weaves a tale filled with adventure. The dialog is excellent and the storytelling is stellar!

What a great idea for a story! I was so excited to come across a fantasy series like this that had a unique plot. And coming from a great author like Halloran, I knew I would be pleased. I was right, this book was so original and fun to read as well. The plot was really tight and well planned. I love it when I read a book that you can tell the author put so much thought into!

Nath is a great character as well. He's so dynamic since he has such a lot he has to do in order to fulfill his destiny of becoming a dragon.

I also feel like I get a double bonus because this is appropriate for my kids to read as well. My son is literally in the middle of it and he hasn't put it down since he started it. That to me is worth the purchase in itself!
