"5 STARS. Brilliant, vibrant prose makes this book a real joy. To create and infuse such energy into the exciting and engrossing pairing of an Irish saint and a Scottish warlord requires more than just a writer's skill or a historian's appreciation; it takes a talented storyteller. Readers ... will love this book." ForeWord Clarion Review
“As a medieval historian, de Fougerolles is deeply informed. Throughout, the reader learns of the Dark Ages’ complicated cultural scene, but this is no textbook: The characters come alive with complex inner lives. Through it all, de Fougerolles writes well. This novel will leave readers eager for more. Exciting, immersive and authentic.” Kirkus Review
"This historical novel set in sixth-century Scotland relates the struggles of St. Columba to establish his monastery and of Aedan mac Gabran to gain a kingship. As a medieval historian, de Fougerolles is deeply informed: Her novel includes historical notes, a glossary and a chronology, as well as hand-drawn maps. Throughout, the reader learns of the Dark Ages' complicated cultural scene, but this is no textbook: The characters come alive with complex inner lives, and Columba's spiritual struggles take on a fully rendered significance that matches Aedan's love affair. Their hazardous journey sparks with rescues, magic, monsters, escapes and miracles. Through it all, de Fougerolles writes well. The first in a planned series, this historical novel will leave readers eager for more. Exciting, immersive and authentic."-Kirkus

We are told that this rare episode of storytelling will continue in volumes two and three of the Chronicles of Iona, scheduled for release later this year. As a Scot myself, I can scarcely wait for their publication, for this period is now but little known beyond a coven of scholars specializing in the research of these dimly lit years. My own wager is that by the time the entire deFougerolles' series is out there where it can be accessed by the general readership, it will become a favorite of those who have previously thrilled to the tales of King Alfred's struggles to repel the invading Norsemen in order to shield the beginnings of Christendom in Britain.
I finished it in 2 days, couldn't put it down. It was a shock when it ended, because the story is clearly not done.
The second book is coming out in September.
