About the Author

Gayle E. Pitman, PhD, is a professor of psychology and women and gender studies at Sacramento City College. Her picture books for children include Sewing the Rainbow and This Day in June, winner of the Stonewall Book Award. She lives with her family in Northern California.

Laure Fournier studied art in France and England before becoming an illustrator and loves creating joyful images of people around the world. She has illustrated the picture book Wake Up, City! She lives and works in the south of France with her family.

A lovely book about an inclusive church.

I loved the illustrations, the diversity in the congregation and the summary and history of the inspiration for this book. I have been looking to build my children’s books collection of books that are not specifically or overtly about LGBTQ+ families/characters, yet normalize the experience. I was grateful to see this book focused on an all inclusive church of diverse identities spanning sexuality, ability, age and race. I would have given 5 stars had I not had some concerns with what I assume were unintentional messages. One page lists “weak and healthy” -I do not think of these as true antonyms. With someone in a wheelchair in the foreground as well as someone with grey hair and someone with a head covering (similar to ones used by cancer patients) in the background, I would hate for children to absorb society’s assumptions that wheelchair users, elderly and cancer survivors are “weak”. Similarly in a page with, what I would assume are 3 while people out of 9 total on that specific page, it is only the white older male that is holding money. That page reads “poor and wealthy”. If an updated version were ever to come into existence I’d also buy that one in a heartbeat as well.
