Review

The big picture on the church in North America is one of a Church in need to renewal, in many cases, even in need of re-thinking what it means to be the church today.  Churches need to stretch themselves, try new wine skins for the new wine the Spirit wishes to fill them with.  What that will take in different contexts will vary, and Gutenson's Church Worth Getting Up For serves as an overview of numerous strategies that are working today, all across the church.  I recommend it highly.     Mike Slaughter, Ginghamsburg UMC

I had this guy as a professor in seminary. I'm not saying this because I liked the fellow-- but honestly - this was probably the best book I read in my church renewal class. It was down to earth and covered some highly intellectual topics in easy to understand and very "real language" ----It's short enough and I have actually loaned it out now to a pastor friend. IF you want to get on "the verge" which is all the craze in church renewal and if you want to know what really makes a difference in churches--- then save some money and just buy this one book. He will touch on Hirsh and others so you don't have to sift through difficult texts to understand it all. Though I will also HIGHLY recommend Churches that Make a Difference by Sider as well.

In Church Worth Getting Up For, Chuck Gutenson has given us more than a dismal set of statistics about the plight of the 21st-century church in North America, although he is well aware of the disheartening numbers and the negative perception of the church in the larger culture (see his chapter on "The Bix Six"). Gutenson moves beyond "what's wrong" to offer readers hope that the church can become what it is called to be--a community that looks like Jesus, that lives authentically, that practices radical hospitality, that keeps its focus on the main thing, that balances right belief and right practice, that moves beyond the sacred/secular dichotomy, that is serious about making disciples, and that will take advantage of all available tools to accomplish its mission. Not a one-size-fits all "how to" manual, Church Worth Getting Up For provides gentle probes and initial questions to get readers thinking about how each chapter's principles might be applied in their particular context. This is a book to be read and discussed in community!

The author presented some good information, but largely played it safe by taking it easy on churches that fail to stand up against injustices and inequality. It is well known that young people find that a major failing of the church and failure to decisively address it is crucial.

Anyone who's done much reading over the last few years about the intersections of church and culture, or about how the world perceives Christians, or about how and what the Church should be doing to address its state will find nothing new in this book.

What every reader will find, however, is a simple, readable, and lovingly straightforward exposition of the relevant issues, including helpful summaries of the latest research data and of the author's interviews with Christian leaders who are engaged (at a practical and pastoral level) in the struggle.

So, if you've got a couple hours and you want to know what would make church "worth getting up for", you couldn't choose a better resource. At worst, it will make you want to take many more hours tracking down source material or digging more deeply into the specifics, and at best, it will equip you to more effectively influence your own church, no matter what capacity you find yourself serving it in.
