This book is a biography of Winston Churchill through the houses he lived in and the gardens he made. It culminates with the full story of his purchase, alteration and creation of Chartwell, Kent, where he lived for more than 40 years before and after the war, and which is now, in keeping with his intentions, owned and run by the National Trust. Churchill was born amidst the splendour of Blenheim Palace but, ever a restless spirit, he owned or rented many houses, both grand and relatively modest, over the course of his long life, including country retreats, modern town apartments and, as First Lord of the Admiralty, Admiralty House. But it was his house at Chartwell that would be for ever associated with his name. Based on extensive and scholarly archive study, this unique book brings to light an array of previously unpublished details and reveals a fascinating side to Britain's greatest war leader.

I am a huge fan of Winston Churchill (I'm even tackling Martin Gilbert's eight volume biography at the moment!). Since WSC loved Chartwell so much, and spent so much of his time there, I come to this subject with some interest. My wife visited Chartwell a couple of years ago -- what a treat. That experience only heightened my interest and great appreciation for the house and its history. Leaving no stone unturned, this book provides a complete (if sometimes a bit dry) history of the house. It also has some great photos of the house at various points in history. If you want to know nearly everything about this ancient, though modern, house and home to WSC then this is the book for you.

I have read a lot about Churchill and so thought this would be another perspective.
It is very detailed. He and the family lived many different places, stayed with all sorts of
titled people, bought and sold houses frequently. It is all there in detail, but I asked myself
why I would be interested in what he paid 80 years ago for a contiguous field where his cows could
graze. It is for someone with very specialized interests.

The book was illuminating on one issue, the fact that Chartwell had 22 guest rooms. Obviously
his over-lifesize personality extended to the numbers of people he wanted to have as guests at one time.

I enjoyed this book because I am interested in the lives of Winston and Clementine Churchill as well as gardening and garden design . This volume therefore managed to capture attention on two levels. The book is extremely detailed and demands some application by the reader, but at the same time this is its strength .It shows something of the other side of Churchill and his attitudes allied to the properties he occupied at some of the most critical points in recent history. Obviously a significant part of the book is devoted to Chartwell and the changes that were made to the house ,grounds and gardens.

I chose this book because of my interest in Sir Winston Churchill and I already have a wide range of books covering many aspects of his life including the multi volume official life but nothing on Chartwell which was so much part of his life. The book lived up to more than my expectations covering not just Chartwell but also all the houses, and there were many, that he and his family lived in.
The account is detailed but not overly specialised and particularly interesting was the account of the farming at Chartwell which was always loss making and required the proceeds of Churchill's war memoirs and History of the English Speaking People to cover it.
